Monoprinting (or monotype print making) is a personal form of printing, that gives life to only one artwork, yet offers great potential for ’painterly print’ qualities. The monoprint shows surface vitality and brush stroke movement rarely seen in other hand print forms. This technique helps to express ideas in a spontaneous and intentional manner, often in a ‘serious play’ mind frame. Blurs, watermarks, raw, dry brushstroke and ‘incompleteness’, are elements that form part of the beauty of this printmaking process. (The photos are from various exhibitions and sources, aiming to show the lively quality of plate monoprinting).

Monotype print-making could also be called ‘painterly print-making’. A final print offers surface vitality and visible brush strokes – smoothly merged, held and pressed into the pores of the crisp paper. For this reason monotype printmaking is one of my favourite printing processes, being interdisciplinary, not exactly pure printmaking, nor may it be seen within a pure painting genre.

Examples of oil-, water- and reduction monotype printing:

‘Dusk’ by Heidi Fourie demonstrates the tonal range and mark-making achievable with oil-based monotype.

Eugenie Marais’s ‘Present tense’ uses water-based monotype to create transparent layers and subtle tonal transitions.

In the reduction monotype ‘Until the Trees bring me to Mind XXV’ by Rina Stutzer, ink is removed from the plate to create the image through negative space.

By popular demand – a second printers workshop at Curious Little Press, bringing another congregation of exploratory creatives together, this time focusing on lithography. Participants found their way through drawing, aluminium plate preparation, processing and hand printing on the press, producing editions of their own.

Curious Little Press hosted its introductory aluminium plate lithography workshop this past weekend with Barry van der Westhuizen. Across two days, participants worked through every stage of the lithographic process, from preparing the plate to developing an image for printing.
