The orchestra is a place where we can come together as musicians and learn to know new people through music. The orchestra consists of a large group of musicians who play together with various instruments including; strings,

woodwinds, brass instruments and percussion instruments. We aim to present exceptional performances that inspire musicians and audiences alike, that motivates growth and appreciation of classical music amongst student of the NWU and our audiences.

Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, the programme for the concert on 15 August has been changed from "Hymn of Praise" to "Beyond the Horizon".
Explore what’s Beyond the Horizon with the NWU Symphony Orchestra on 15 August at 19:00 in NG Miederpark Church! Bringing together celebrated classical works and music from some of the most memorable films and television series of recent decades, the programme explores courage, sacrifice, adventure, memory and the enduring human desire to look beyond the familiar.
We start with the Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. One of the most beloved orchestral interludes in the operatic repertoire, its expansive melody and deeply expressive character evoke hope, longing and the promise of something beyond the horizon. We are transported across oceans through the sweeping and emotional music from Titanic with soprano soloist Annemarie van der Westhuizen. This is followed by the Ballet Music from Charles Gounod’s opera Faust, with graceful melodies, lively dances, and brilliant orchestral writing; this music captures a world of splendour, fantasy, and theatrical excitement.
We visit Mulan, celebrating bravery, identity and the courage to follow one’s own path. The moving score from Band of Brothers honours friendship, loyalty and sacrifice in the face of extraordinary adversity, before revisiting the warmth, nostalgia and gentle resilience of Forrest Gump. The orchestra will enter the dramatic world of Game of Thrones, with its powerful themes of conflict, destiny and ambition.

Learn How different Instruments sound as we prepare for the NWUSO – Hymn of Praise alongside the NWU Serenaders for a stirring performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental Symphony No. 2, Op. 52, Hymn of Praise, at the NG Miederpark Church on 15 August at 19:00.
Conducted by André Oosthuizen, the performance will bring together the expressive power of a full symphony orchestra, choir and vocal soloists in one of Mendelssohn’s most uplifting large-scale works. The soloists are sopranos Thembinkosi Magagula and Nomgqibelo Sukwana, and tenor Thomas Erlank.
Also known by its German title, Lobgesang, the work weaves the traditions of the symphony and sacred cantata, guiding listeners from darkness into light through a journey of faith, gratitude, and renewal-an inspiring experience to share with the community.
Like the rays of the sun at dawn, come, let the sound wash over you!

Immerse yourself In Blue on 16 May at 19:00 in the Sanlam Auditorium! The NWU Symphony Orchestra explores the many moods and shades of this captivating colour in a vibrant and evocative programme.

The evening opens with Leaving Home from Avatar: The Way of Water – a powerful and atmospheric beginning. This is followed by Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, an elegant and beautiful suite filled with wonderful and heart-stirring melodies. Feel the energy of the city that never sleeps in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, performed by the orchestra’s own pianist, Sergio Tavares – a thrilling highlight from start to finish. No homage to blue would be complete without Johann Strauss’s beloved Blue Danube, transporting us to the charm of Vienna. A moment of reflection follows with Bruch’s deeply moving Kol Nidrei, featuring principal cellist Charles Oliver as soloist. We close the evening back in the ocean with a dazzling selection of music from The Little Mermaid.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of music that captures the beauty, depth, and emotion of blue – and leave your blues behind.
