Congratulations to Thalente Khomo and Thembi Mthembu, recipients of the 2026 Momentum Aardklop Award for Best Exhibition!

This remarkable achievement celebrates the power of photography to tell stories, preserve memory and explore the complexities of identity, ancestry and the body.

Women in Art presents a compelling photographic dialogue between the two Durban-based artists and DUT graduates. Through their distinct yet complementary practices, Mthembu and Khomo explore Black identity, personal history and the body as both subject and archive. Mthembu's self-portraiture reflects on identity and the ways in which the body is seen and perceived, while Khomo’s photography honours and preserves ancestral and personal memory. Together, their works create an intimate and powerful conversation across generations.

We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the artists and exhibitions nominated for the Awards. Your creativity, dedication and contribution to the visual arts continue to inspire and enrich our cultural landscape.

The NWU Gallery presented "This is where I post from" an exhibition exploring the intersection of masculinity, digital aggression and artificial intelligence.

Through four life-sized humanoid figures inhabiting a dark, digital cave, Robbertze examines the online antagonist and the ways human behaviours, prejudices and desires are absorbed and reproduced by the digital world.

Suspended between man, avatar and machine, the figures challenge us to consider how the environments we create begin to shape us in return.

As part of Aardklop 2026, the NWU Gallery hosted the Young Eyes, Bold Art! children’s art programme from 30 September to 1 October 2026. The programme welcomed children between the ages of 6 and 15 into the gallery, creating an opportunity for young participants to experience art in an engaging, creative and hands-on way.

The programme was designed to introduce children to the world of visual art while encouraging them to explore their own creativity and imagination. Through practical activities, the children were able to experiment with different artistic techniques, including painting and mixed media, while being guided by NWU Gallery staff and facilitators. The programme created a safe and inspiring environment where children could express themselves freely and enjoy the process of making art.

HOLDING GROUND

“You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

Holding Ground was an all-woman exhibition that honoured the enduring strength, resilience and unwavering presence of women.

The exhibition celebrated the women who nurture, protect, sustain and rebuild often carrying the weight of families, communities and generations while continuing to stand firm.

Inspired by the idea of women as bedrock, Holding Ground invited audiences to reconsider where power truly lies. From the margins and within the spaces they occupy, women have long provided the stability, support and continuity upon which others stand.

Through diverse artistic voices, the exhibition reflected on the many ways women held ground — through strength, care, resistance, resilience, creativity and presence.

Holding Ground invited us to pause, to look closely, and to recognise the immeasurable strength that women embody.

It was a celebration of the women who hold us up, hold us together, and continue to hold their ground.

Through the use of self-portraiture, Mthembu explores themes of identity and the ways in which the body is perceived. Her work explores the notions and politics surrounding ‘the body’, with her often using her own body as a site for her artistic exploration of these themes.

If you haven't had the opportunity to view her work yet, this is your moment to engage with these thought-provoking explorations of identity.
