What an incredible way to wrap up our Uhadi Instrument-Making Workshop!
Day 2 was all about bringing our handcrafted Uhadi instruments to life! Participants put the finishing touches on their instruments before diving into an inspiring musical journey led by Thandeka Mfinyongo. The session introduced participants to the beautiful sounds of the Uhadi, exploring music created with this remarkable instrument and highlighting some of the talented musicians who continue to preserve and celebrate this important cultural tradition.
From there, the excitement only grew! Participants enjoyed an in-depth introduction to playing the Uhadi, learned traditional songs, experimented with different techniques, and even created melodies of their own. The room was filled with curiosity, laughter, creativity, and the unmistakable sound of learning through music.
The energy throughout the two days was truly inspiring. It was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic group of people come together to learn, teach, collaborate, create, and have fun while celebrating South Africa's rich cultural heritage.
A heartfelt thank you to all our participants, artist Thandeka Mfinyongo, and the NWU Gallery team for making this workshop such a memorable success. Your passion, dedication, and willingness to learn made these two days something truly special.
The journey doesn't end here! All the Uhadi instruments created during the workshop will form part of the UMZILA (The Legacy) exhibition, opening on 12 August 2026 at the NWU Gallery.
