‘Wanne jy my naam hoor’ is dance piece which asks: What do you really hear? This performance, created by Darion Adams explores how people and places are seen - and sometimes not seen.
Rooted in Manenberg and Porterville, it looks at what is noticed and what is ignored, and how names carry history, stories, and meaning.
It asks: When you hear my name, what do you feel? Is it truth, fear, distance, or connection?
The title is inspired by and gives honour to Porterville-born artist, Rosey Die Rapper, and her song, “My naam hoor.”
Created by Darion Adams as part of their time at Purple Mountain Arts Residency
Performed and created in collaboration with
Heinrich Engelbrecht, Shumene Swartz, Liam Hendriks and Jaywin Maroem.

What did Philip Ivey do at the height of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa that inflamed a global campaign of resistance, and even helped to inspire the name of our Purple Mountain Arts Residency here in Porterville? If you would like to know more about this courageous and amazing man, come and be part of his conversation with Rosie Campbell, who was a secret anti-apartheid agent in her younger days. Catch Philip and Rosie at Aloe House at 4pm on Saturday, 21 March. All our events are free and everyone is welcome, but booking is essential. To book your place, Whatsapp us on 076 876 7298.

David Schmidt’s solo theatre performance, ‘The Beta Man Alphabet’, caused a sensation at last year’s National Arts Festival in Makhanda, so we are thrilled to have David and his play at our Human & Environmental Rights Festival here in Porterville. Billed as “raw, poignant, honest and sometimes disarmingly funny”, ‘The Beta Man Alphabet’ is “a story about shame and cowardice, [and] the ambiguity of identity and about finding strength in kindness”. The Beta Man Alphabet, starts at 7pm on Saturday, 21 March, in the barn at Howzit Growing Plant Nursery. All our events are free and everyone is welcome, but booking is essential. To book your place, contact us on WhatsApp on 076 876 7298.

Two of Porterville‘s most valuable establishments must be our libraries. Not only are these places of learning and access, they are also sanctuaries where hungry minds can grow. We are therefore thrilled that Carron Vermeulen and Annelene van Wyk will share their experiences as librarians with us at our inaugural Purple Mountain Human and Environmental Rights Festival. Come sit with us and hear what Carron and Annelene have to say on Saturday Saturday, 21 March at 10:00am, at the Porterville Library. All our events are free and everyone is welcome. But booking is essential. To book your place, Whatsapp us on 076 876 7298. Carl Collison
