🍷 A JOURNEY THROUGH BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF 🍷
This weekend, The Tank Room is hosting a tasting of the distinctive w**es of Boekenhoutskloof, one of South Africa's most renowned w**e producers. 🇿🇦
THE STORY 🌿
Established in 1776 in the far corner of the Franschhoek valley, Boekenhoutskloof takes its name from the "ravine of the Boekenhout", an indigenous Cape Beech tree prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead were bought and restored, and a new vineyard programme was planted to Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. The first Boekenhoutskloof vintage followed in 1996, from a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard that is still in production today.
THE WINES 🍇
Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, and its premium range sells out on release every vintage.
The Chocolate Block: a Syrah-based blend, and probably the most successful new w**e to come out of South Africa in the modern era. The first vintage was 2002, with just 15 barrels bottled and released in 2003. Since 2015 it has carried W**e of Origin Swartland status, with grapes from the Porseleinberg and Goldmine properties.
Cap Maritime: elegant coastal w**es, including a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir.
Helderberg Reserve: a full-bodied Stellenbosch red, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak. Expect ripe blackcurrant, spice, and a fresh finish.
Porcupine Ridge: delicious, great-value everyday w**es, firm favourites on tables around the world since the first release, a Sauvignon Blanc, in 1997.
THE PEOPLE 👨🌾
Managing Partner and Technical Director Marc Kent is the driving force behind the brands. A maverick spirit who is unafraid to experiment, his principal commitment is to quality in every detail. He was named Diners Club W**emaker of the Year in 2007 and is a founding member of the Swartland Revolution. 🏅
THE RECOGNITION 🏆
John Platter's W**ery of the Year (2012) and Platter's South African W**e Guide Editor's Award for W**ery of the Year (2020).
THE LAND 🌱
Conservation is a priority on the farm, with invasive alien plants being cleared, the riverine area being restored and protea species being re-introduced. The property is also home to a rare Erica, Erica lerouxiae, found only at Boekenhoutskloof and the neighbouring farm. 🌸
