An allegorical tapestry, spelling and an opinion.

"The modern world seems so tied up in its foolish pursuit of convenience and efficacy that we are well on our way to destroying one of the greatest and most beautiful features of our language"

Sometimes one has to sit back, relax and enjoy a fabulous blog. A lesson I certainly had to learn this week

When the first of the month arrived, everything for the blog was prepared except for myself.
My weekend was packed with errands, birthday parties and of course rehearsals.
I'm on the other side of the table as production assistant for our local production of Matilda the Musical! It's an incredible and wild experience and I am loving every minute of it.

But through all this madness I did not rest, and fate would have it that I fell sick to force me to anyway.
Today, guiltily taking a day of work to rest off my illness, I read our blog. And I was grateful for us, and our quiet corner. And grateful for theatre, and language and art. And minds that read and dream.

I hope that a quiet rainy day and a cup of tea will find you too, and you will have a moment to enjoy this.
Happy July!

I have recently discovered that there is a large modern movement that dedicates itself to the 'reformation' of English spelling, whose soul ambition in life is to do away with 'knee' and 'though' and 'ballet', to be replaced with the much more logical and understandable 'nee' and 'thow' and 'balay'.

"I am firmly convinced that with the knowledge that 'pretty' once meant ' manly', or that 'lord' in its probable Germanic root meant 'one who guards the loaves', speech is brought into perspective somewhat. Nay! I am convinced that a short look into the development of the second person pronoun would give one a most hearty understanding of English (and the English)"

Ruth's monthly blog has become our beloved staple here at Stick and Stone. As Nizaan plunges further into her local theatre exploits and the coffee shop opens a second location, life for the team has become nothing short of wild. Yet between all this is still the moments we come together and celebrate literature and the arts.
Ruth has a way with words that reflects her passion perfectly.

With much love and pride we present to you our monthly blog!
Written by the talented Ruth Johnson who has a great capacity for disecting all topics Shakespeare related with wit and charm. This month she yet again creates a lovely article for our little website. It is a quick and easy read with good insights but I won't spoil it for you here :).

Have a blessed May and we'll see you next month!

Shakespeare was a playwright and a poet. Shakespeare was a not novelist, he was not an English high school curriculum developer, nor a language professor.

English in her undergarments
By Ruth Johnson

“There seems to be a strange conviction that English is an unchanging and universal language, that English was forever as she is now, clothed in all dignity.
Perhaps it is usual that any first language speaker considers his first language in this light.

The unhappy fact is, however, that; as all trees are subject to winter and all men to death, all language is subject to change.”

'Far be it from me to despise the hearty appreciation and love for the English language. I do not here attempt to propound indifference, or even contempt, for what I believe to be the most lovely of Languages. I merely say that we cannot know that English is lovely, if we do not know what she is.

A philosophy of language

“What is the purpose of Language? If you tell me it is to make pretty noises, I say that it is not. If you tell me that it is to conform one's mind to a universal unchanging standard of grammatical law, I say that it is not. “

What is the purpose of Language? If you tell me it is to make pretty noises, I say that it is not. If you tell me that it is to conform one's mind to a universal unchanging standard of grammatical law, I say that it is not. Words are a means unto an end, and not an end in and of themselves. Language...

What is the proper response to histories wittiest of artists?

Latest blog post by Ruth Johnson

So how do you respond to Shakespeare?

Laugh yourself silly?
Weep and wale?
Analyze and scrutinize?
Pick apart until just the bones are left?

Do tell

Shakespeare. This is a name, I fear, of dread to most. It is a name conjuring a variety of despised school memories, of pomp and snobbery, of incomprehensible language, lengthy speeches and unintelligible analogies, of snooty Oxford gentlemen and intimidating critics. How far alas from Shakespeare's...

After a lovely break from the "baby" Ruth and I are starting things up gradually. We have been tinkering on loads of ideas for this year to share with you!
We have decided to take it a bit easy for a start. This is mostly due to the fact that I (Nizaan) am busy with plays in the city such as The Taming of the Shrew and Theodor Herzl high-school's production of The Odd Couple. Ruth on the other hand is also busy running the best coffee shop in the world (be sure to pop in at and chat!)
So in the next few months we'll be blogging and chattting in our stories and comments. And maybe have a few surprises along the way. 🤐
Don't forget to check out our website and keep sharing your art with us! Let's have a theatrical year!

HERE'S TO 2022 WITH STICK AND STONE!!
