KAGANO WELCOMES THE HEARING LOOP SYSTEM AT ROODEPOORT THEATRE

Kagano Africa welcomes and applauds the installation of the Hearing Loop System at the Main Theatre at Roodepoort Theatre.

This is a commendable step toward truly inclusive and accessible performing arts. By enabling patrons with hearing aids and cochlear implants to experience live theatre with clarity, Joburg City Theatres and the City of Johannesburg are ensuring that no one is left behind.

As an organization that trains performers, we strongly support initiatives that make the stage accessible to everyone - both on stage and in the audience.

We encourage our community to make use of this vital facility.

THIS DAY IN SOUTH AFRICAN ACTING HISTORY:

On 5 August, South Africa celebrates two major names in acting and a date that changed the country’s theatre forever.

1. Veteran actor was born on this day in 1934 in Johannesburg. He won a Tony Award alongside and for Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and The Island, and later starred in films like A Dry White Season.

2. Actress and filmmaker also celebrates her birthday today. She is known for The River, Beyond the River and Am Not a Witch.

3. Playwright wrote groundbreaking works like The Island and Sizwe Bansi Is Dead that gave South African actors a global voice and exposed the realities of the time.

From banned stage productions to award-winning film, today reminds us how South African actors turned struggle into story.

These 4 are the main collecting societies in South Africa. They make sure you get paid when your music is used.

1. SAMRO - Southern African Music Rights Organisation
It collects Performance & Public Royalties for composers, authors, and music publishers

You get paid when your song is played on radio, TV, in shops, restaurants, events, live shows, or streamed.

eg. You wrote a song. Every time it’s played on Radio 247 or at a restaurant, SAMRO collects money for you + the publisher.

2. CAPASSO - Composers, Authors and Publishers Association
It collects Mechanical & Reproduction Royalties for composers, authors, and publishers.
You get paid when your song is reproduced. CD sales, downloads, streaming, YouTube, ringtones, cover versions.

eg. Someone streams your song on Spotify 1000 times. CAPASSO collects from Spotify and pays you.

Note: SAMRO and CAPASSO work together. Most writers register with both. SAMRO handles performance, CAPASSO handles mechanical/streaming.

3. RISA - Recording Industry of South Africa
It is the record label body. Represents record companies + distributors.
It fights piracy, gives Gold/Platinum awards, lobbies government.

RISA itself doesn’t pay you directly. But they license music and work with SAMPRA.

4. SAMPRA - South African Music Performance Rights Association.
They collect needletime / Public Performance Royalties for record labels and featured artists/performers.

You get paid when the sound recording is played in public. Radio, TV, clubs, gyms, shops, streaming services.

eg. Your song plays on Radio 247. SAMPRA collects money for you the singer + your record label. SAMRO collects separate money for the writer.
