A Fragile Balance | JAN
How much weight can we carry before the things supporting us begin to give way?
A Fragile Balance, JAN’s latest original oil painting, explores the tension between vulnerability, fear and hope.
The small chair beneath the figure appears barely capable of carrying his weight. It becomes a symbol of stability, control and the fragile structures we depend on.
Then there is the tiny bee. Almost lost against the scale of the figure, it introduces something unexpected: hope, luck, possibility and perhaps a dream. But the bee can also represent fear, reminding us that hope and anxiety can exist side by side.
Through bold expressionist brushwork, vivid colour and fragmented marks, JAN turns a simple scene into something more psychological. The painting asks us to consider the things we fear, the weight we carry, and how easily life can shift from stability to uncertainty.
