Can You Believe It’s the Same Mountain?

There is something wonderfully dreamlike about Aimee Lindeque’s use of colour. A familiar Cape landscape, a house, a mountain we know.…and yet through her eyes it becomes something completely different.

The title asks such a simple question: Can you believe it’s the same mountain?

Because it is.

The mountain changes with the light, the season, the weather and where we happen to be standing. And perhaps we do too.

Aimee takes something recognisable and shifts our perspective, using unexpected pinks and warm tones to remind us that there is never only one way to see a place.

Sometimes we simply need to look again.

PAIRING.

We pair w**e with food.
Art with space.
People with people.
Ideas with ideas.

And sometimes, when the pairing is right, each brings something different out of the other.

Claude Chandler’s Pairing feels particularly at home at Avondale : bold, contemporary and almost impossible to walk past. And I love seeing it in conversation with the older bones of the farm: terracotta floors, timber, antique furniture and all that history.

Perhaps that is one of my favourite things about this gallery.

Not making everything match.

Pairing things that make each other more interesting.

Dressed for the life you dream of.

There is something wonderfully confident about this work.

The pattern. The tailoring. The posture. The flash of gold. And then, held quietly in his hands: LA SAPE.

More than fashion, La Sape is about identity, dignity and self-expression. About choosing how you present yourself to the world, sometimes in circumstances that might suggest otherwise.

And that feels beautifully connected to DREAMS.

The ability to imagine yourself differently.
To dress for possibility.
To carry yourself with pride.
To believe in a brighter, bolder future.

A celebration of African style, individuality and optimism ….and a reminder that sometimes a dream begins simply with how we choose to see ourselves.

Spring seems to be creeping into the gallery. 🌸

There is a freedom to Lauren Shantall’s painting that we love.

The flowers aren’t carefully contained. Brushstrokes remain visible. Colours overlap. Stems lean in unexpected directions.

It captures something a perfectly arranged vase never quite can:

the beautiful unruliness of things that are alive.

A piece that feels like bringing a little bit of the garden indoors.

Cape Town….. but not quite as you know her.

Aimee Lindeque transforms the city into a blazing landscape of red and illuminated yellow windows.

Where the Ubers Disappear looks across the streets where old trees meet some of Cape Town’s oldest buildings, beneath the shadow of Table Mountain.

But look at all those windows.

Every one contains a life. A conversation. A heartbreak. A beginning. A dream.

Perhaps that is what makes cities so fascinating - thousands of private worlds existing alongside one another.

And somewhere amongst them… apparently, where the Ubers disappear.

PAINTING VS THE REAL AVONDALE MOUNTAINS

The view. And then the artist’s view.

This is one of those wonderful moments where art and Avondale seem to speak directly to each other.

Swipe between the mountains behind the farm and Santjie Viljoen’s interpretation of them.

The geography is recognisable, but Santjie isn’t simply documenting a landscape. She captures what happens when light, cloud and mountain collide for just a few minutes - transforming something familiar into something extraordinary.

A photograph records what was there.

An artist shows us what they felt when they saw it.

And having this work hanging within sight of the mountains that inspired it feels particularly special.

Come take a look today and share a glass of w**e, a meal FABER or a coffee under these art pieces Avondale W**e 🫶 open daily 10-4.

There is something wonderfully alive about Lauren Shantall’s flowers.

They aren’t neat botanical studies. They bend, overlap and tumble into one another, painted with loose, confident gestures and glorious colour.

They feel like flowers remembered rather than flowers recorded.

A little wild.
A little imperfect.
And completely alive.

Exactly how we like our gardens and perhaps our lives too.

Pop in to see our art gallery - open daily with coffee and w**e from 9-4.
