[3] The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
Meaning of the Verse
This verse captures the core of Edom's sin namely arrogance
• "The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee":
Their pride was so great that it blinded them to their own vulnerability. They believed they were invincible.
• "thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high":
This is a direct reference to their well-fortified, mountainous home. Living high in the cliffs of Petra, they felt untouchable.
• "that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?":
This question reveals their defiant and boastful attitude. They were confident that no enemy could ever conquer them.
What Happens Next
The book of Obadiah declares that God will punish Edom for its pride and for its cruel actions against Israel. Specifically, when Jerusalem was being destroyed by the Babylonians, the Edomites not only stood by and did nothing, but they also gloated over Israel's misfortune and even helped their enemies.
Because of this, the prophecy foretells Edom's complete downfall. The very next verse, Obadiah 1:4, says, "Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD." The book promises that Edom will be made "small among the nations" and ultimately destroyed forever. Historically, the Edomites were eventually displaced by the Nabateans and, after a long history, disappeared as a people.
