Last week, we convened a highly successful workshop on Art, Sound & Healing Technologies. This was in collaboration with partners at Nelson Mandela University. A total of 8 universities were represented in the workshop. We also had attendees from the NGO sector and the director of the Alliance Francaise de Port Elizabeth, Christiane Michel, was also present. Contributions ranged from artistic research in visual arts & music to ethnobotany & social work. We look forward to further collaborations in this project. Thanks to Prof Alethea de Villiers for hosting us at NMU Music & Performing Arts department, and Dr Benjamin Izu for chairing the session.

๐Ÿ“ขOn 20 June 2026 Afropolitan Explosiv held our heritage themed Youth day celebration showcasing dynamic Newcastle talent. This was in remembrance of Dr Mazisi Kunene, UNESCO Poet Laureate (1993) who, despite exile, insisted on writing his poetry in isiZulu to preserve his African heritage and oppose colonial prejudices.

๐Ÿ“ŒHighlight of the day: Reading the poetry of uDokotela uMazisi Kunene surrounded with the African rhythms and sounds he must have held close the memory of, while writing isiZulu poerty in exile. Representing Mazisi Kunene Museum & Foundation:

On 15 June Afropolitan Explosiv engaged in a Local Artists Engagement Session held by Newcastle Municipality.
As an organisation that creates artistic events & SME opportunities in the creative sector while driving job creation and employment for artists in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, we understood that our presence and voice in this engagement session was important in standing with artists. We expressed the collective desire of all artists to have well-funded arts programs by local government, so that the work of creating a robust culture of artists with agency flourishes and remains in Newcastle.

No more should stellar Newcastle artistic organizations be overlooked, starved of funds to implement vibrant programs nor be sidelined.
