"My artwork is a celebration, exploration, and sometimes a confrontation of what it means to be a woman in todayโ€™s world. I create art about women because their stories โ€“ our stories โ€“ deserve space, depth and visibility.
Through my work, I aim to challenge stereotypes, honour resilience, and explore the layers of identity, emotion, culture, and power that define womanhood.
Whether through portraiture, symbolism or abstraction, I am drawn to the strength, softness, rage, beauty, vulnerability, and wisdom that women carry. My art is inspired by real experiences (my own and those of others) and shaped by history and everyday moments that speak to the universal and personal truths of being a woman.
This is not just about women; it is art FOR women. It is a visual language that speaks of empowerment, representation and reclamation. It follows a process of reflection, recognition, and reclamation of self.
I want viewers to feel seen, to ask questions and to connect โ€“ to recognise the stories that have been silenced and the voices that are rising.
Creating art about women is my way of contributing to a larger narrative of change, one where women are not just muses or subjects, but storytellers, leaders, creators and revolutionaries.

"This series is not just about representing a landscape, but about really seeing our surroundings . Being in the moment. A part of it, not apart from it and therefore taking/owning the responsibility of our presence.
I hope to evoke a sense of wonder for the places we recognise and with which we have a connection.
The different fabrics remind us that the view we are seeing is not a flat 1 dimensional plane but a rich and varied landscape of texture and colour.
Perhaps seeing through new eyes, the colours we thought we knew.
Let these remind you of the special place you chose and the realisation that you are a part of it."

"I am passionate about being inventive and resourceful with whatever is at handโ€” from watercoloured paper to thread and fabric. I embrace imperfection and spontaneityโ€”there is never a set โ€œplan.โ€ Transformation lies at the heart of my creations, and the journey matters as much as the finished work.
Here in the Overberg, โ€œStrataโ€ is visible everywhereโ€”from canola fields framed by mountains to stones scattered across fields and our garden.
I aimed to create something personally meaningful, rooted in natureโ€”from moss to the wider landscape."

"Within my practice I celebrate traditional wisdom passed down through generations of women, embracing nostalgic memories of learning crafting techniques and the value of handmade woven and crocheted items. Each piece honours the often overlooked but influential role of female ancestry within the varied traditions that shape South African culture. Women have historically been regarded as the guardians and initiators of culture, yet their contributions often go unnoticed. My artworks provide a platform for this collective, female-driven culture, recognising the significant role of women in a predominantly patriarchal society where their creations are acknowledged, but the artists remain unseen.

Referring to my artworks as 'light relief,' I craft them using a self-drying natural stone clay medium rolled out to paper-thin thickness, forming intricate bas-relief sculptures. A meditative quality exists in the repetitive nature of the process. Using unusual sculpting tools such as toothpicks and needles, the damp surface of the clay is rhythmically pricked and scored with indents, holes and incisions. The work is made intuitively by using the malleability of the clay and the process as a guide. In this way, shape and form are observed and possibilities are kept open for new compositions and connections to be discovered."

"My work explores the relationship between surface, structure, and transformation. Through layering, texture, and colour, I investigate how forms evolve, revealing traces of growth, accumulation, and change.

The porcelain vessels are constructed through overlapping layers that conceal and reveal the underlying form, creating a sense of fragmented wholeness. Soft glazes within the interior spaces offer moments of stillness, contrasting with the movement and complexity of the exterior surfaces.

The terracotta vessels draw on the expressive qualities of clay through richly textured surfaces and contrasting fields of colour. Evoking processes of weathering, erosion, and renewal, they speak to the elemental nature of the material and the passage of time.

Together, these works reflect an interest in the layers; both physical and metaphorical, that shape our experience of form, place, and memory."

โ€œMy paper sculpture comprises an etching of a female figure, overprinted with an etching of our solar system. This work on paper is then woven with a map of our galaxy, and then a star chart of constellations is pinned to the surface and the shapes marked in red embroidery thread. This piece encapsulates layers of our known world, with the idea that all matter is composed of elements created during the chaotic creation of the universe. Our survival as a species living on a fragile planet suspended in the vastness of the unknown is nothing short of miraculous, yet as Homo Sapiens, we still ask the inevitable - Who are we, Where do we come from, Where are we going?โ€

โ€œThis paper sculpture draws on the writings of Ovid and his metamorphosis tales. Daphne is pursued by a Titan and calls on her father, a River god for help. She is transformed into a tree and I have taken this moment of transformation as my point of reference. A linocut of a tree was woven into a drypoint of a female face, and then juxtaposed with an engraved linocut of a female torso which was layered with linocut of a tree and collage of birds. The layers of meaning, history and mythology are the Strata of this paper sculpture.โ€

"Napier South Africa is my hometown and therefore
most of the work I made for the Strata exhibition is based on a papercut street map of my beautiful village.

Some parts I deconstructed to highlight the layering of history and culture, and some I used to highlight the typography of this valley based town.

With a title like " WE ARE HERE" the big quilt map was a fun way to claim our place as 'Napierians' as well as the exact spot where the quilt is hanging.

The Strata exhibition is open at Overberg Contemporary Art gallery, 44 Sarel Cilliers str (main rd) in Napier SA, Wednesdays to Fridays 10am to 4pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
