Dr Thilo Beck is a biologist and wildlife photographer based in Mtunzini, South Africa. Growing up in Germany, he developed a lifelong fascination with snakes and other reptiles. In 2018, he moved to South Africa to undertake an MSc on the thermal ecology of Cape cobras in the Kalahari—research that was later upgraded to a PhD.

His scientific work with cobras sparked a passion for photography, which has since become an integral part of his work in conservation and storytelling. Thilo has received the CJ van der Horst Prize for outstanding postgraduate research in Zoology from the University of the Witwatersrand’s Faculty of Science, as well as first prize at the University’s 12th Cross-Faculty Postgraduate Symposium and the Zoological Society of Southern Africa wildlife photography competition. He also received second prize in the Herpetological Association of Africa’s photography competition.

Thilo’s photographs were published by National Geographic as part of the promotion for Disney+’s Underdogs series. Since moving to South Africa, he has done projects across the country as a wildlife and conservation photographer, using his images to share the remarkable stories of the country’s wild places and animals.

Join him at 10H30 at Art in The Shade on 29 August for a photographic presentation of local nature.
