Amasosha Art Movement Amasosha Art Movement is a dynamic group of artists from Durban and surrounding areas.

The" word Amasosha is an isiZulu name loanword derived from the English word `Soldiers’. Amasosha is a collective of young artist from Durban who united together and form a movement that will allow Durban artist to work together as a unit and help each other in uplifting their skills in this art world. Amasosha is a Zulu word that means Soldiers ,people who have patience,courage and also who are hard workers that work in unit and fight up until they win.

Meet the panelist...

Mthobisi Maphumulo is a Durban-based artist and the founder of the Amasosha Art Movement , a collective of young artists working in the city. He uses oil pastel and monoprint, making figurative imagery that is critical of capitalist social structures, like race and class. Using symbolism and layered titling, his works reflect on South Africa’s unequal economy, emphasizing the social and psychological effects of dispossession and impoverishment.

Mthobisi joins the discussion on How to be an artist in Durban at the Art Resource Centre, happening tomorrow.
