BACK TO OUR ROOTS | TEA BLENDING & HERB LORE 🍃 🫖

For the first time, Montagu Museum staff members, Hilton Koul and Julia Draghoender, stepped into the role of tea-blending guides, inviting festival-goers into an immersive experience.

Two of the Museum’s own blends were on show: the INSOMNIA Blend and the COLDS & FLU Blend — offering a glimpse into the traditional knowledge held within the Museum’s herb collection.

ꫂ❁ Julia also demonstrated the tradition of making a tussie mussie — a small, fragrant posy made from herbs and flowers. Festival-goers could then create their own tussie mussies, adding a wonderfully hands-on and personal touch to the workshop.

After Saturday’s miserable weather, Sunday brought the sunshine. The patio at Joubert House was looking its best, with the mini herb exhibition perfectly complementing the beautiful medicinal herb garden backdrop.

The Montagu Herb Festival is a family-friendly weekend, with plenty to spark curious young minds — from exploring and playing to tasting, creating, and simply soaking up the atmosphere.

We love seeing the festival through their eyes.

A little rain isn’t going to dampen our Herb Festival spirits! 🌿

Light rain is predicted in Montagu from late morning into the early afternoon.

☔️ So grab an umbrella and come along!

In fact, an umbrella might just be the perfect accessory for today’s scheduled guided walks and open gardens.🌿☔️

⭑ PLEASE NOTE ⭑ | While we can’t control the weather, we can make a Plan B!
We have alternate venue options in place for the Kids’ Station and Chef Demos, should they be needed.

We’ve been drilling, painting, decorating, and getting everything ready for an epic day at the Montagu Herb Festival Kids' Station tomorrow!

Bring the kids down for hands-on activities, photo ops, and plenty of festival fun.

End your Herb Festival weekend on a delicious high at 22 Church Street. The Veld & Vine menu is a five-course, wine-pairing lunch celebrating inventive flavours from the veld.

Expect combinations such as fynbos honey-glazed pampoenkoekies, renosterbos cheddar, honeybush-roasted naartjie, lemon verbena crème fraîche, and buchu confit beetroot. 🌿🍷

The lunch also includes a talk by plant ecologist, Prof Edmund February, on the remarkable regenerative power of nature after a flood. (Booking is essential)

OUT WITH THE GNOMES, IN WITH THE SCARECROWS! 😉

Our Gnome trio (who we miss dearly) sent word from their travels: they've found our new festival mascots!

While wandering through fields and farmsteads, they stumbled upon a rather extraordinary patch and met these five friendly scarecrows. 🌾

Having spent their lives quietly watching over distant crops, this party of five was intrigued when they heard about the Montagu Herb Festival. And when they discovered that Montagu had also just won ‘DORPIE VAN DIE JAAR’ - well, it was a no-brainer! They instantly volunteered for the job. 🏆🌿

By nature, they’re reserved and a little shy about stepping into the spotlight for the first time. But they’re ready to leave their comfort zones behind and continue the tradition of being the festival guardians.

They arrived in Montagu today with barely a moment to settle in before being whisked straight into a festival photoshoot! 📸

Over the weekend, you’ll find them keeping watch at the festival’s three main hubs: the Old Mission Church, Joubert House, and Die Stasie.

Make sure to stop by and say hello. They’re ready to strike a pose and keep the magic alive! 🌿🍄
