Medicine stolen from the San people

The San (known by some as bushmen) have used the Hoodia Gordonii plant that grows in the Kalahari desert for hundreds of years. The plant is used treat eye infections, stomach pain, to suppress their hunger and thirst during long hunting journeys.

In 1997, South African-based Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) discovered the plant's ability to suppress the appetite and patented it with a US pharmaceutical company called Pfizer.

CSIR told Pfizer the San no longer existed.

In 2001, the court ruled that the San should receive an income from the patent. A benefit sharing agreement stipulated that the San would receive 6% of all royalties.
