Remember, a drum kit is one instrument made of various different percussive elements 🥁

When mixing drums, you should apply separate processing to:

The Kick
The Snare
The Hats
The Toms
etc…

BUT, you should group all of these separate elements together as well to create a drum buss. This way, you can apply processing to the grouped percussive elements and treat the drum kit as a single instrument 💯

To recap:

Apply processing to the individual ‘pieces’ of the drum kit first, and then group the pieces together and apply processing to the entire drum kit.

New Video on mixing drums dropping on Thursday, 1pm.

Good day producers 👊

This week I’m going into some advanced techniques with regards to drum processing…

One cool technique you can use to clean drum samples is Mid/Side EQ. It’s a very underrated, yet super powerful tool to remove room tone, reverb, and unwanted low end from drum samples with stereo information…

It might sound a bit confusing, but stay tuned for the full video where I explain and show you this amazing technique.

Full video dropping on Thursday, 1pm.

You may have some drum samples lying around that you really like, but if they have a big room tone on them that you don't find pleasant then do this...

Take an EQ and change it into the 'S' mode or 'Side' mode. Select a highpass filter and cut all the lows and most of the mids from the sample.

What this does is remove anything that is not mono. Majority of the drum sample will be mono, but the room tone is stereo and will be removed from the instument 😉

In this video, I essentially cut the high-end on the shaker to make the tone a bit darker...

This removes any unpleasant 'sharpness' from the sound that tends to fatigue the ear and cause irritation.

Give this a go with hi-hats and shakers to create a smoother tone 💯

This is an interesting question...

The main reason for compression is to keep the loudness of an instrument even so nothing abrasive pokes you in the ear😂

BUT,

with drum samples... everything is triggered at the same velocity and at the same loudness.

What does this mean?

It means that you don't acutally need compression for the prupose of keeping the drums level...

Instead, you can focus on using analogue compression to add warmth, punch or extra harmonics to the samples.

What do you guys think? 🤔

Running drums through an analogue compressor has the ability to add harmonics and warmth to the tone🔥

These added harmonics typically allow the drums to translate better on playback devices such as laptop and phone speakers.

I’ll be going into some detail as to how I use analogue compression when mixing kick drums in my next video.

Dropping:

Tomorrow @ 1pm.
