Celebrating 10 years of Ethnikids

NIROX Foundation and Ethnikids have had a long-standing, successful partnership since 2017.
Ethnikids is a women-owned online bookstore that specializes in inclusive and diverse children’s books in all official South African languages. The organisation aims to tackle the literacy challenge in South Africa by positioning reading as a leisurely, pleasurable activity and providing opportunities for children and families to engage with authors and storytelling.

Saturday 26 September offers a relaxed family day outdoors with hourly book readings from the very best local authors.

NIROX recently hosted Laura Guglielmi for a weeklong residency during August 2026.

Guglielmi is an Italian writer, journalist, teacher and cultural curator. Her professional and literary work has developed over more than three decades across journalism, literature, cultural research and the arts.

A recurring theme in her work is the relationship between literature and landscape. She is fascinated by the invisible stories contained within places: memories, absences, transformations, personal histories and cultural layers. Her approach combines literary research with a very personal form of observation, often moving between the intimate and the historical.

This has strengthened her interest in the idea of place as an active element in a life story: a landscape can offer refuge, transform a person, influence their imagination and become part of the meaning of their work. It can also create unexpected connections between people separated by time, geography and culture.

Guglielmi is particularly interested in the space where literature meets visual art, nature and place. She is drawn to forms of contemporary culture that invite people to look differently at their surroundings, and to the possibility of using writing not only to describe reality but to reveal connections that are not immediately visible.
Travel is an important part of this practice. She approaches unfamiliar places with the curiosity of a journalist and the attention of a writer, interested not only in what can be seen but in the stories, voices and histories that gradually emerge through observation and encounter.

Her interests therefore range from literature and biography to contemporary art, landscape, cultural memory, travel writing and the relationship between human beings and their environment. She is particularly interested in the dialogue between different forms of storytelling and in the possibility of bringing literary writing into conversation with visual art and other creative practices.

For Guglielmi, writing is fundamentally an act of attention: a way of staying with a person, a landscape or a story long enough for something unexpected to emerge.

NIROX recently hosted Cesare Viel for a weeklong residency during August 2026.

Viel is a visual artist, teacher and writer, previously known for his installation and performance work and recently focusing more closely on photography, drawing and writing. Viel employs a conceptual approach to his artmaking, and at this stage in his life he is particularly drawn to trees, fallen trunks, branches, roots, stones, rocks and boulders found in nature. Viel captures them through photography, and from this experience his poetic practice of writing and drawing with coloured pencil develops.

During his stay at NIROX, Viel documents what draws him in and aims to incorporate it into a larger book project he is currently working on titled “Phrases Happen. A few lines, many roots.”. The book includes thoughts, dreams, journeys, memories and drawings coming together as a subjective and embodied creative methodology based above all on a practice of paying attention to and listening for the unexpected and the unpredictable.

Viel notes, ‘The hardest layer of language, is a phrase of mine that evokes the moment when one tries to pinpoint the core of one’s ongoing research. It is the ‘hardest’ part of language because it is almost impossible to achieve, yet at the same time, it is both useful and necessary to try.’

Works in progress by Wezile Harmans is an ongoing creative research project.

The artworks in progress are currently on display at the NIROX Covered Space. They offer a glimpse into Harmans’ practice, highlighting issues pertaining to social justice inequalities. Harmans’ practice stands witness to the act of creation, materialised through the observation of welcoming and unwelcoming spaces.

The artworks form part of Harmans' ongoing residency at NIROX and will be available to view during regular park hours until 12 September 2026.

This past weekend NIROX hosted ecological artist .affolderbach and her long time collaborator for a special performance opening the doors to NIROX Nature reserve for the first time.

In open Highveld terrain, Annegret unfolded '01.surrender', a sensuous durational 3-hour performance. In this first in a series, she intertwined ingredients gathered from the landscape — grass, rocks, earth, water, wind, sun, rhythms — with an emotionally tailored performance garment created by UNI FORM by Luke Radloff; a tender honouring of the Highveld, an endangered life-giving grasslands biome in The Cradle Of Humankind.

The beautiful 30m long textile Annegret created is now resting before a second performance will see its metamorphosis.

Join us at 11AM on Wednesday, 2 September, at NIROX for a discussion between Justice Albie Sachs, Dr. Phokeng Setai, Khanyi Mawhayi (Zeitz MOCAA), and Ithateng Mokgoro (Yvonne Mokgoro Foundation) on the subject of Ubuntu in law, art, and politics today.
Moderated by Sven Christian, this discussion draws parallels to Justice Albie Sachs’s “Preparing Ourselves for Freedom” (1989), in which he argued that, through “repeated incantation,” art as a “weapon of the struggle” had lost some of its elan and energy. This panel will focus on whether, over the past twenty years, Ubuntu’s overuse/oversimplification has created a similarly “shallow and forced relationship” between the term and its values.
At its heart is a desire to reinvigorate Ubuntu within the public imagination, drawing on its use by Justice Sachs and Justice Yvonne Mokgoro in applying South Africa’s Constitution; most notably in 1995, when Justice Mokgoro introduced the philosophy in the first case heard by the ConCourt.
Centred on capital punishment, Mokgoro’s introduction of this philosophy helped bring an end to the death penalty in South Africa, opening the way for the recognition of indigenous values as integral to constitutional law.
The discussion is conceived as a bridge between “Spring is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs” at Zeitz MOCAA (curated by Dr. Phokeng Setai) and the forthcoming “I AM, WE ARE: Ubuntu as a living heritage” (curated by Ithateng Mokgoro and Sven Christian). It marks the first public activation of “I AM, WE ARE” — an opportunity to preview artworks produced during a recent workshop, “Reimagining Democracy,” held in collaboration with Fine Acts and OWoN as part
of their SPRINTS program.
The workshop was held in partnership with KuMo&Co and the Kromdraai Impact Hub. It will culminate in an exhibition at NIROX from 19 September – 1 November 2026.
