Meet the Artists: Michelle van Reenen’s practice explores the relationship between the conscious and unconscious, creating a space where inner and outer worlds can coexist.

Her vibrant paintings emerge through an intuitive process of layering, erasure, and markmaking that allows imagery and meaning to unfold organically. In creating landscapes, portraits, and abstract forms on discarded materials such as MDF offcuts, she embraces texture, memory, and transformation as integral parts of her artistic process.

For Michelle, colour functions as both a language and therapeutic medium – a way of remembering, revealing, and processing experience. Through surrendering control and trusting intuition, she allows her work to become an exploration of the psyche, emotion, and her personal narrative, ultimately inviting reflection on the shifting landscapes within ourselves.

Meet the Artists: Theresa Wormser has worked with clay for more than thirty years, exploring the expressive possibilities of this medium through a range of hand-building techniques. The surfaces of her works are often marked with impressions made with found objects collected on walks around the Cape Peninsula, where she draws inspiration from the textures of the rugged coastline and the resilient beauty of fynbos.

For Theresa, the act of creating is more important than achieving perfect representation. The hand-thrown forms in her A Moment in Time series, for example, are intentionally asymmetric, reflecting the unpredictability of life and the ways in which experience shapes us. Through these imperfect yet balanced forms, she celebrates individuality and the importance of maintaining a sense of uniqueness.

Meet the Artists: Anneke Potgieter is an abstract landscape painter whose work is characterised by an atmospheric, ephemeral nature. Of particular interest to her is how mood and perception shift, and the role that language plays in making sense of these changes in our outer and inner worlds.

Filled with mist, reflected light and shadow, her landscapes lie close to recognition but remain open to interpretation – like the psyche, they are at once familiar and strange, never fixed. Given her background in linguistics, she often uses asemic writing in her work to underscore this push and pull between certainty and flux in our attempts at sensemaking.

Anneke builds her landscapes in layers, using pastels, charcoal, pencils, watercolours, inks, acrylics, oils and cold wax. The varying tones and textures of these media allow her to add and remove information, leaving traces of thought and feeling just below the surface.

Meet the Artists: Reagan Rubain is a mosaic artist who works with a variety of materials, ranging from glass, tiles, and ceramics to even waste and other found materials.

Having grown up in Ocean View, a community that originated out of the dark days of Apartheid’s Forced Removals Act in the 60s and 70s, Reagan initially turned to art as a means of survival. Soon, however, it became a way of life – the tedious, knucklebusting work quickly morphed into something both therapeutic and rewarding.

Today, Reagan aims to incorporate meaning into all his mosaic work. Public art being a long-time passion, his greatest achievement to date is having contributed to the “Wag ‘n bietjie” project in Simonstown and Kommetjie, which commemorated the forced removals in Cape Town through beautifully mosaiced public benches. The project was undertaken in collaboration with the Simonstown Museum and victims of the removals.

Meet the Artists: Gill Allderman is a contemporary mixed-media artist exploring themes of movement, history, and belonging. Her work is created in series, each unfolding a narrative through texture, colour, and structure. She glues, paints, moulds, and weaves materials together intuitively in an attempt at finding the threads that stitch and hold them together as an anchor to her experience.

Gill’s artistic practice is deeply influenced by place, the fluidity of water as a space of refuge, and the forgotten routes that shape our collective memory.

Her works reflect a balance between concept, abstraction, and storytelling, always searching for meaning in the spaces we cross and inhabit.

Gill was awarded a postgraduate diploma in fine art (with distinction) from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2021, and has exhibited both locally and internationally.

Meet the Artists: Retha’s practice, rooted in repetition, draws on personal and collective narratives in its exploration of connection and the quiet psychological landscapes of human experience.

Her work explores the relationship between fragility and resilience through materially driven sculptural processes. Her practice is rooted in repetition, where acts of cutting, binding, piercing, and assembling become both method and meditation. Drawing from personal and collective narratives, she creates forms that reflect emotional states shaped by memory and embodied experience. Erasmus often works across two distinct approaches: large-scale sculptural structures that occupy space with quiet authority, and smaller, labour-intensive works that demand close, intimate viewing. This allows her to examine tension between permanence and transience, strength and vulnerability.

The materials she chooses- often delicate or unconventional - carry traces of time and touch, reinforcing the sense that making is both physical and psychological. In this way, her sculptures become sites of contemplation, where process is as significant as form and where meaning emerges through repetition, restraint, and attention to detail.

Meet the Artists: Beth Lowe, a long-time resident of Kommetjie, is a passionate plein-air oil painter and watercolourist, as well as a dedicated collector of objects that are old, weathered, natural, and beautiful.

Originally from a farm in the Northern Cape, Beth studied fine art at the University of Stellenbosch. Her rural roots and deep connection to the land continue to shape her creative vision.

Her plein-air work is inspired by light, the ocean, and cloud formations - an enduring fascination since childhood. Painting outdoors allows her to respond directly to nature’s shifting moods, and to capture the pulse of the sea and the ever-changing atmosphere of the Cape coastline.

Watercolour has always been a constant in her artistic journey. In recent years, her practice has evolved to include mixed media and textile-based works, incorporating found objects as well as hand-stitching.

Meet the Artists: Kim Black gravitates towards the freedom that Nature represents and therefore early on in her career she chose flowers as a theme that continues to define her work.

Not only does Kim believe that nature affords us insight and awe at the Power of
Creation, she also understands its colors are a powerful tool which can soothe or give energy.

Immersing herself in the creatively wild acts of painting, Kim throws paint on the canvas, watches colors drip through their natural forms and glides her brushes with feeling to achieve desired results.

In this modern world if AI and screens, the most incredibly miraculous gift is our human ability to marvel at the enormity of a World within a flower.
