We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Ivan Links and the entire Amandla Dança Teatro ZA team and community.
Ivan was a dedicated drummer, facilitator, educator, and artist who contributed immensely to the development of both music and dance. Through his work with Amandla, his rhythms carried many productions, giving life, movement, and spirit to the stage. His drums did not simply accompany dance... they spoke to it, guided it, and breathed energy into every performance.
When an artist passes, it is never just a person we lose. We lose a rhythm, a voice, a presence that once helped shape the soul of our creative spaces. Yet artists never truly leave us. They remain in the echoes of their work, in the memories of the stages they once filled, and in the hearts of those they inspired.
Go well, Ivan. Go dance and make more melodies for us wherever the ancestors gather.
Your drums will always ring in our ears and in our hearts, our souls and memories.
Until we meet again, and dance together once more...

The Dance Pages Post-Festival Outreach this weekend was a breath of fresh air. It was incredibly meaningful to bring this experience to Richmond; a community that has never encountered the arts in this way before.

For many young people, it was a moment of firsts: the first time stepping onto a performance platform, the first time seeing unused spaces come alive with creativity, and the first time witnessing what the arts can unlock in their own community.

We hope this experience has sparked inspiration and possibility in many young hopefuls in the area.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this moment possible:

The Festival of Firsts

The David April Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognises agents of change. Individuals who have built and continue to build legacies that transform the lives of children and young people through dance. It honours the mentors who, even in the most challenging of times, still dared to dream. It celebrates the legends whose work continues to shape the young generations of dance in South Africa.

The first recipient of the David April Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award:
Who was Ama visionary, educator, and bridge-builder. David April embodied the spirit of inclusivity, mentorship, and cultural pride. His work transcended performance; it inspired purpose. Through his passion for community and his belief in dance as a voice for social change, David reminded us that art is not only what we do, but who we become through it. His legacy lives on in every dancer, teacher, and storyteller he touched.

We are proud to present this award to two remarkable agents of change whose influence continues to shape and connect generations of dance-makers:

Sylvia Glasser , retired founder of Moving Into Dance, and Alfred Hinkel, founder of Garage Dance Ensemble.

Their journeys, like David’s, remind us that true artistry is measured not only by movement on stage — but by the lives we move beyond it.

DANCE PAGES 2025 Awards...

About the Award.

The Dance Pages Teko Moipolai Honorary Award

Teko Moipolai was the center manager of the Mayibuye Center. He was a government official like no other. Deeply committed, unwaveringly supportive, and a true visionary. His leadership helped shape the Academy’s remarkable role in society and in the lives of countless dancers.

The Dance Pages continues to honor his legacy through the Teko Moipolai Honorary Award. This accolade is awarded to any government official in recognition of Mr Moipolai's reflection of his dedication, humility, and belief in the power of the arts to transform communities.

This year, we are proud to present this award to one of the most hardworking and devoted officials as the first recipient, a woman who truly embodies the spirit of Teko Moipolai. What makes this recognition even more meaningful is that the recipient herself serves as a dance specialist and cultural officer, but most notably the former manager of the Mayibuye Dance Academy. Therefore there's no one more deserving as the as the First Recipient of this award than Ms Lizelle Julie.

Too often, the tireless efforts, inner struggles, and unseen challenges of such officials go unnoticed. Yet, through perseverance and faith, they continue to hold on, believing that their work matters, that their position is valuable, and that their impact is deeply felt.

This weekend, we honored that spirit.
