🎉 20 Years of Existence – 20 Years in Motion
This year marks a profound milestone: two decades of Lucky Dance Theatre. Our anniversary programme is not only a celebration of legacy but also a commitment to the future. Designed to create more jobs for dancers, choreographers, music composers, musicians, dramatarge, costume designers, facilitators, and technical crew, it embodies our theme: “Creating jobs for artists—with dignity and fair payment.” For us, decent remuneration is not negotiable; it is the cornerstone of respect for the artist.

🤝 Collaborations & Partnerships
- We continue our partnership with Fisher’s of Man Arts Project on the third phase of Kiwanja, a visionary collaboration by Gregory Maqoma. We are currently exploring possibilities for its premiere. we remain humbled and grateful, while inviting further partners to join us in bringing this magnificent work to life.

🌍 Continental & Global Vision
Lucky Dance Theatre is committed to expanding its network across Africa and beyond. We are in conversation with choreographers from across the continent, building collaborations that will share knowledge, experience, and understanding. Looking ahead to the next 20 years, we envision extending our work internationally—co-hosting programmes with other dance companies, creating platforms that empower township-based dancers and choreographers, and ensuring that African dance is celebrated on the world stage.

💡 Our Commitment
Africa’s dance community is rich, resilient, and ready. Lucky Dance Theatre pledges to participate in, support, and strengthen existing platforms across the continent. Together, we will accelerate progress, create sustainable opportunities, and honor the artistry that defines us.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Buru Mohlabane, co-director of Via Katlehong dance company and a shining light in the South African performing arts scene.

Through his work with Via Katlehong, Buru produced and performed in iconic productions that showcased the power and beauty of Pantsula dance to global audiences. His dedication to promoting this unique dance form and creating opportunities for dancers from Katlehong and Ekurhuleni has made a lasting impact on our community.

Buru's vision for Pantsula My World, a project aimed at developing a methodology for isipantsula dance, was a testament to his commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure. His dream was to see Pantsula taught in schools and universities, earning its rightful place alongside other esteemed dance genres.

As Lucky Dance Theatre, we draw inspiration from Buru's passion, creativity, and generosity. His legacy will continue to motivate us to push boundaries and believe in the power of art to transform lives.

Our hearts go out to Buru's family, friends, and the Via Katlehong community. May his memory be a celebration of the joy, love, and beauty he brought to our world.

Rest in peace, Buru. Your impact will be felt for generations to come."🙏🙏🙏

20 Years of Legacy | Honoring Lucky Kele & Lucky Dance Theatre 🖤

Today, we pause to reflect on a journey that began two decades ago with a dream, a rhythm, and a man whose vision continues to shape our every step.

Lucky Dance Theatre was born from the heart and hands of Lucky Lehlohonolo Kele—a self-taught dancer, choreographer, and mentor from Katlehong, whose artistry was rooted in Afro-fusion, African traditional, and Western contemporary dance. Lucky believed in the power of movement to heal, to uplift, and to transform. His legacy is etched not only in the works he created but in the lives he touched.

On this day, we remember his passing—not with sorrow alone, but with deep gratitude. His spirit lives on in every rehearsal, every performance, every young artist who dares to dream.

This 20th year is especially poignant. It marks a full circle: the year we finally collaborated with Gregory Maqoma, a long-held dream of Lucky’s. Though he is no longer with us in body, we know he would have been proud to see this vision realized. To work with Gregory—an icon in his own right, a mentor, a mirror of excellence—is to honor Lucky’s aspirations and affirm the enduring power of artistic lineage.

From township stages to international platforms, from “Separation” to our most recent works, Lucky Dance Theatre has remained committed to storytelling that is bold, rooted, and revolutionary.

Thank you to every dancer, supporter, and soul who has walked this path with us. Here's to 20 years of movement, memory, and meaning—and to the next chapter, guided by the light of those who came before us.

🕊️ Rest in power, Lucky Kele.
Your name dances on.

🎉👏BANABESO REALEBOHA! SIYABONGA! HAKHENSA!🙏

Today, we pause not only to celebrate a performance, but to honor a process—a journey of becoming. Kiwanja is more than a choreography; it is a living, breathing testament to collaboration, courage, and care. It is built on the hands, hearts, and hopes of many. And so, with deep appreciation, we offer our thanks.

To Gregory Maqoma Thank you, Sir, for your extraordinary generosity and spirit. Despite a demanding schedule, you not only accepted our invitation—you embraced it. You worked with us, walked beside us, and held our hands through this process. Your presence is not just a collaboration; it is a gesture of profound care and solidarity. We are humbled and inspired.

To the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture Thank you for funding this initiative through the Mzansi Golden Economy. Your support made this vision a reality. Siyabonga—your investment in the arts continues to empower and uplift communities like ours.

To Theatre on the Square, Sandton, and Daphne Kuhn Thank you for welcoming us with open arms and assisting us with everything we needed. Your hospitality ensured we felt at home, and your commitment to the arts created a space where Kiwanja could truly breathe. We are deeply grateful.

To the Katlehong Community Thank you for coming out in your numbers, for embracing us with warmth and pride, and for affirming the work we are birthing from your soil. Your presence was a powerful hug—we felt seen, held, and stronger because of you. Your support is the heartbeat of Kiwanja.

To Our Special Guests We extend heartfelt thanks to all our invited guests who joined us in this creative journey. Your presence, your energy, and your belief in the work gave us strength and affirmation. Among you, we especially acknowledge Andrew Kola, who traveled all the way from Botswana to be with us—re ya leboha, Rre, for making time and adjusting your schedule to walk this path with us.

To Our Team To every dancer, every creative, every member of the production crew—your dedication, talent, and heart are the foundation of Kiwanja. From staging to lighting, from rehearsals to final bows, you brought this vision to life. You built Kiwanja with your hands, your sweat, and your spirit. Thank you for showing up, for holding space, and for believing in the power of this work.

To Our Creative Community Kiwanja breathes and grows because it is held in love. The development of this show has been a vulnerable, transformative journey—one that evokes the essence of being and celebrates the collective insight of creatives. Thank you for walking this path with us.

With love, respect, and deep appreciation,
Kiwanja

We are deeply saddened by the loss of the extraordinary Mr Michael Manana Vct, who embodied a fatherly figure in our artistic journeys, profoundly impacting numerous artists through Vukani Community Theatre.

Our artistic director Thembela Hlatshwayo had the privilege of learning invaluable arts administration skills from this giant, while the late founder of our organisation Lucky Kele greatly benefited as a dancer at Vukani Community Theatre. Your groundbreaking contributions to the arts sector have transcended borders and oceans, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives through productions like "Hola Majimbos" and "Engomeni", among others.

Your visionary spirit led to the production of the Ingxubevange Music Festival 2016, featuring renowned artists such as Black Coffee, Kwesta, and KO. Your selfless dedication has paved the way for structures that unite artists, empowering us to speak with one voice. Your legacy will continue to inspire us, and we will strive to build upon the foundations you have laid.

As we bid you farewell, we take comfort in knowing that your name will forever be etched in our hearts, and your life's work will remain a beacon of hope and creativity. Lala uphumule qhawe, may your memory be a blessing to us all.🙏🙏🙏
