ASAI is hosting a second edition of the workshop series 're/writing South African art history' (first launched in 2025) with the topic 'critical points in the 1980s' as the focus of the first workshop.
Tributaries (1985) and The Neglected Tradition (1989) are widely credited for
signaling seminal shifts in South African art history. This workshop considers the unique qualities of these exhibitions, through a critical reading of their catalogues and contemporary reviews. The exhibitions are considered in relation to what came before, i.e. why they were necessary, as well as their legacies.
Date: 15th July 2026
Venue: Art Resource Center, DUT City Campus, Anton Lembede St
This workshop is primarily aimed at educators from universities, museums and non-profits. It is also suitable for art teachers and individuals with a keen interest in art history, such as curators; writers, postgrad students, as well as artists.
