H.E Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang of the Republic of Ghana meets a delegation from York University in Accra...

"I met with a delegation from York University at my office. The group highlighted York University’s growing focus on Africa, particularly given the continent’s youthful population and the emerging opportunities for academic exchange, innovation, and research collaboration.

Our discussions centred on the importance of creating stronger institutional linkages between Ghanaian and international universities. The University expressed its readiness to support partnerships that foster knowledge exchange, student engagement, and shared learning opportunities.

As a York University alumna with a longstanding relationship and personal history with the institution, the engagement was particularly meaningful to me. I recognised the importance of international collaboration and experiential learning, noting that direct engagements with diverse cultures and environments often leave a lasting impact beyond the classroom. I also reaffirmed Government’s openness to initiatives that create opportunities for young people, strengthen educational cooperation, and connect students across borders.

The meeting highlighted the value of educational partnerships in building meaningful global connections and preparing the next generation for an increasingly interconnected world."

President John Dramani Mahama of the The Republic of Ghana delivered the opening and closing remarks at the Rethinking Health roundtable during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, co-hosted by William Ruto and Emmanuel Macron.

In his remarks, President Mahama underscored the urgency of transforming Africa’s healthcare systems, noting that while the continent bears a disproportionate share of the global disease burden, it produces only a small fraction of its pharmaceuticals highlighting the need for self-reliance and strategic investment.

President Mahama urged stakeholders to move beyond rhetoric to tangible implementation, stressing the need for a unified continental approach. He challenged leaders to develop a collective framework that brings Africa together to improve health outcomes and build resilient healthcare systems for its people.

H.E.John Dramani Mahama the president of The Republic of Ghana signs into law the transformative bills recently passed by Parliament. The Legal Education Act, the Value for Money Office Act, and the Governance Advisory Council Act

"Before leaving Accra for Nairobi, I signed into law three transformative bills recently passed by Parliament. The Legal Education Act, the Value for Money Office Act, and the Governance Advisory Council Act strengthen our institutions and protect the interests of every Ghanaian.

The Legal Education Act is a game-changer for our justice system. By ending the exclusive authority of the Ghana School of Law over professional legal education, we are introducing healthy competition and opening doors for more institutions to provide high-quality training. This ensures that we maintain the highest standards while creating the space many aspiring lawyers have long waited for.

With the Value for Money Office Act, we are institutionalising the review of major government contracts and expenditures. This office will be our frontline defence against inflated contracts, cost overruns, and wasteful spending. Every cedi spent must provide real value to the people of Ghana.

I am also proud to have signed the Governance Advisory Council Act. This fulfils a key promise I made to promote good governance and public trust. This independent body will help our efforts to combat corruption. It also ensures that leadership remains accountable to the people. "

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a state-of-the-art PET Scan facility at the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, describing it as a major milestone in Ghana’s journey towards world-class healthcare delivery and medical sovereignty.

President Mahama said the advanced diagnostic centre will strengthen early cancer detection, improve treatment outcomes and reduce the need for Ghanaians to travel abroad for specialist medical care. He added that the facility positions Ghana as a future medical hub for the West African sub-region.

The President also announced major interventions in healthcare, education and housing, including new regional hospitals, additional CAT labs, teacher housing projects and the $300 million STARR-J initiative aimed at ending the double-track system by 2027.

He commended GNAT and the management of the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre for their visionary investment, stressing that quality healthcare, teacher welfare and education remain central to Ghana’s national development agenda.
