Whether you want to break into the burlesque business or you just want to challenge yourself with an unforgettable experience, the Tournament of Tease is your chance to shine! The Tournament of Tease is now a yearly competition run by Vintage Nouveau Burlesque and Sapphire Supreme, to take the legacy that Miss Oh! built and continue growing the art of the tease and body positivity throughout SA. W

e are offering 13 contestants the opportunity to perform a burlesque solo in front of a live audience. It's a great way to give burlesque a try – and many current members of the Jhb Burlesque community got their start this way! Where it all started, a glitter filled history:
The Tournament of Tease was fashioned to a London monthly night of the same name, which a then new-to-burlesque-Miss Oh! performed in, in 2009. "It was a beautiful & inspiring evening, where I was lucky enough to share the stage with strong, independent, creative women- who now inspire others in the tight knit Burlesque scene around the world. I would not be a burlesque performer today, if I didn't participate in such a fantastic event!"

TOT is the perfect platform to discover and express yourself, celebrate your body and to showcase your individuality. It’s also a space to connect, create and play with like-minded humans.

Burlesque is an incredibly empowering artform and the sense of belonging and community you get with working with the organisers, contestants, sponsors and judges are testimony to that.

It’s freeing, safe, hyper creative and a total blast!💥

The art form of Burlesque has provided me space to explore freely all the parts of me I used to hide. I have grown so much in so many ways in the many years I have enjoyed being part of this diverse community; as an audience member, a performer, a teacher and a judge.

My advice to budding burlesquers is to allow yourself to be vulnerable on stage and be brave enough to delve as deep into your metamorphosis as you want to go. The rewards will stay with you forever.

I've wanted to do Burlesque for the longest time. And in 2019 I finally got to attend a class or two with the amazing Sapphire Supreme. She convinced me to take part in The Tournament Of Tease. I didn't really think I was up to it, but I took a chance anyway. I've been dancing since the age of four, but this was such a new experience for me.

Being allowed to express myself freely was quite a challenge coming from a very Ballet trained mind set. But what a wonderful and uplifting experience it was. I was privileged enough to win the 2019 Tournament and wore the crown with pride until 2025. Along the way I got to make the most amazing friends and be part of one of the most supportive, caring and uplifting communities of creative artists.

I feel truly blessed to be able to learn to get to know myself and grow as a performer amongst these amazing people. If you feel like you are missing some joy, growth and self-understanding please give this a go, you might surprise yourself... Much Love Mitzi

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Tournament of Tease 2025 for the incredible opportunities they’ve given me. From the stage to the beautiful family they’ve cultivated, this community has truly recognised, empowered and nurtured my talents in ways I never imagined possible. Through this journey, I’ve not only grown as a performer but have also been trusted with shows and opportunities that have allowed me to expand my reach and share my art to a wider audience.

As a drag queen 'specialising' in dance and lip-sync performance, burlesque has taught me to feel more confident in my own skin, to command presence and to take up space unapologetically. More importantly, TOT has created spaces where I feel safe and supported enough to experiment, take risks and try new things without fear. It has given me the courage to bring creative ideas to life, ideas I once thought were out of reach and to fully step into my vision as a performer by blending drag and burlesque in exciting ways that has evolved my drag persona.

If you’re just starting out in burlesque or looking to grow into a more multi-faceted artist in any form, TOT is truly a place where transformation happens. I am humbly grateful and so proud to be part of the TOT family, and I hope the next group of contestants can experience the same growth, opportunities and magic that this journey has given me. Love you TOT❤️

I love the Tournament of Tease. I have been a contestant, an audience member, a guest performer and in 2025 a judge.

It helped me grow as an artist and inspired me. Watching others and being with others, inspires ideas that you can bounce off your peers. It’s also an incredible amount of fun! 🤩

Be crazy, be yourself, take advice from performers but stay true to your essence. People will come for YOU. Authenticity is underrated and oh-so-desirable.
