SUBTRACTION
Ark Contemporary
Rosendal, Free State
ark Contemporary
Substraction Exhibition 2026 at ark.contemporary.
Substraction is a lexical blend of subtraction and abstraction and is also an obsolete and now considered incorrect spelling of subtraction.
Abstraction is the act or process of identifying common patterns and extracting core ideas by stripping away unnecessary or complex details. It allows you to focus on what something does rather than how it works, shifting your attention from specific, literal objects to broad, conceptual categories.
The prefix sub- originates from the Latin preposition sub, which translates to “under,” “below,” “beneath” or “underlying”.
This exhibition explores the idea of abstraction as the subtraction of surplus information to reveal the essence or roots of ideas and concepts of the artworks exhibited.
Whether you’re visiting Rosendal in person or exploring from afar, we invite you to spend time with the exhibition and discover the diverse artistic voices on show.
