Vinyl lovers, we only drop records! Bringing you the finest in underground house music from the original JHB crew and presented by Remote Productions
The South African house sound is different to the rest of the world. Our DJs’ play music at a slower tempo and our crowds are willing to dance to deeper sounds than Europe or America. There is something fundamental about house music that speaks to A
frican music lovers. The deep house sound is firmly rooted in the progression of technology while attempting to retain the soulful sound of early disco music (particularly influenced by retro labels like Philadelphia International and Salsoul Records). The forefathers of house music include legends like Larry Heard, Larry Levan, Ron Trent, Moodymann and Kerri Chandler. The birth of house culture began with records spinning on a turntable and the analogue sound of vinyl. There were several independent retailers in Johannesburg during the mid to late 90s that distributed these exclusive singles. At the vanguard were shops like Dance Trax and Shelter Records that set the benchmark for deep house in South Africa. Owner/Dj Tim White and Dj Dave Togher were underground DJ’s that played a pivotal role in introducing deep house sounds to the South African crowds. Radio stations like Metro FM and Y-FM proceeded to kick house to the next level featuring renowned DJ’s like Glenn Lewis, Vinny Da Vinci and Mbuso. Twenty or so years later house music is still with us. It is something to celebrate. It is also a legacy of the many people involved in club culture that have played important roles over the years. Soul Horizons is the first in a series of parties that provides a platform to listen to DJ’s that that have made important contributions to deep house culture in Johannesburg.
