For two years in a row, Alchemy Theatre has had the opportunity to design and build custom events for Johannesburg!

In 2025, we crafted a bespoke murder mystery set in a gorgeous manor house that forms part of Johannesburg's rich history.

Earlier this year, we stretched our creativity to design a unique business rescue experience that put participants directly in the hot seat of a board of directors. The game combined the intense pressure of steering a company away from a multi-million rand disaster with immersive puzzles that revealed the story behind the crisis.

We are so grateful to YPO Johannesburg for giving us the opportunity to curate these incredible memories as part of your members' experience!

With El Niño on its way, we're saying "yes please" to the rains before it arrives, but have all the sads for postponing our escape room!

We're sorry to say the Benoni Night Market planned for Friday, 4 September won't be going ahead.

With rain forecast to move through the area, we've made the call to postpone for everyone's safety and comfort, your evening out is worth waiting for the right conditions. The good news: we'll see you at Northerns Sports Grounds on Friday, 9 October instead, same great food, craft, and live music lineup you were looking forward to.

We're running Jar of Hearts at the Roodepoort Theatre Family Market on Sunday. This escape room has a very special place in my heart (pun accidentally intended). It was the second room we designed for Alchemy Theatre, and the very first event we ran for our Gallery of Illusions season.

It's the story of an artist and his lost loves, and is a bittersweet, surreal exploration of relationships and how they shape our perspectives. I'm not a huge fan of horror, so while our escape rooms have the high time-pressure, we have yet to design rooms that are genuinely scary.

Since its first iteration on Valentine's Day this year, it's undergone some revisions to make it even more exciting to solve, testing your ability to communicate under pressure, make leaps of logic between abstract concepts, and problem solve as a team.

I'm really proud of this room - and the fact that it shares its birthday with our daughter makes it that much more special. 💜

Just a little note before I go play with the toddler and the newly discovered oobleck before bed... we're 2 followers away from 300 and it's super exciting.

So, I turn 40 in just over a month. It's an age I'm pretty proud to be reaching and I've experienced a lot of different things in 40 years.

However, I seem to have missed out on a fairly common childhood experience (common at least according to hubby). I'm talking about oobleck. For those who, like me, might have no idea what that is, I promise it's a real word. At least according to Dr Seuss and the people who decided to repurpose it to mean the non-Newtonian fluid created by mixing cornstarch and water.

I discovered this incredible substance at around 19h30 last night, when I was attempting to figure out a way to make fake fingerprints for our murder mysteries (don't ask, but you may find out if you come to one of them next time. 😉)

I spent the next few hours playing with it, feeling like a kid at Christmas and omg, I've found my new favourite thing. I've cooked with Maizena since I was a kid, but somehow it never occurred to my mom (or she didn't know), to show us what happens if you mix water and cornstarch in exactly the right ratios. And I feel both cheated and delighted that at almost 40, I am still awed by science that feels like magic: Alchemy.

You and your team will have exactly 45 minutes to decode his abstract art, navigate the physical forces of magnetic attraction, and escape the bonds of his failed relationships.
