Starting a new sketchbook can be daunting!

Here are three tips for breaking in your new sketchbook and embracing imperfection.

✏️Tip one: Use the first page to get to know your tools and explore the colours you have to work with. This page can be a really good way to ease the ‘perfect first page pressure’ and help you just get started.

✏️Tip two: If you’re struggling with what to draw, draw the first thing you see around you.

✏️Tip three: Experiment with sticking paper or Post-it notes onto the page, then drawing over the top. This can be a great way to explore textures and embrace imperfection.

Spring is here! Bring the outdoors in with this simple guide to drawing realistic grass using our Derwent Drawing pencils! 🌳

For this tutorial, you’ll need three colours: Olive Moss, Fresh Green and Light Moss.

1️⃣ Step one
Create a light base using Green Moss.

2️⃣ Step two
Using the Fresh Green pencil, begin to sketch lines of grass with a heavy to light pressure. Fill in the whole area where you would like your grass to cover.

3️⃣ Step three
Add some depth with Moss Green. To get a natural look, we recommend adding this in loose zig zag blocks before blending it out with soft lines.

4️⃣ Step four
Add dimension by using the darkest shade (Olive Earth) to create shadows.

5️⃣ Step five
To create a soft finish, apply a layer of Fresh Green across the whole area to help blend everything together.

There you have it - a simple guide to drawing grass, perfect for any spring time drawing 🌸
