uban Salsa! Salsa is a dynamic musical phenomenon of the 70s and 80s time. The 70s being the most significant of the salsa era. From the homelands of Puerto Rico and Cuba to the Americas, salsa has found it ways into South Africa. The beauty of the Spanish Harlem (New York) brought about the main setting for the dance in the 50s and 60s with main bands experimenting with various combinations of sounds which continue till this day. Tito Puente, the King of Mambo, and Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa was representative of the salsa culture in that time. The romantic notions of salsa exploded on the scene in the 80s by artists like Gilberto Santa Rosa. As we are a country that celebrates the various heritages this land has to offer, come and take a sneak peek into this intriguing culture of Salsa! What is Rueda de Casino? The call of Cuba where an intermingling of numerous dance partners occurs to create a circular configuration as a group. The name Rueda De Casino derives from its origins in El Casino Deportivo, a Havana social club. The most authentic thing about this dance is that every move and hand signal has a name and is called out by the leader. Rueda creates a good atmosphere for many couples to take part at once. As you take on this zesty dance you will feel the rueda flow thru the sounds of Afro-Cuban/Latin-American music and entice you to completely new level of awareness in dance!!! Why has Salsa become so popular? It really is the ideal way to meet people from wide and varied backgrounds. Many ex-pat visitors coming to work in Gauteng have found it difficult to meet new friends, both local and from other countries.
