Long before Zimbabwean hip-hop had the global visibility it has today, Zimbabwe Legit were already making history in America. 🇿🇼 Formed by brothers Dumisani “Dumi Right” Ndlovu and Akim “Akim Funk Buddha” Ndlovu, Zimbabwe Legit are widely credited as the first African hip-hop group to record in the United States. After moving from Zimbabwe to America, they signed with Hollywood BASIC and released “Doin’ Damage in My Native Language” in 1992, recorded at New York’s legendary Calliope Studios. The track was produced by Mista Lawnge of Black Sheep, while an early remix by DJ Shadow later became a sought-after piece of underground hip-hop history. Their planned debut album never arrived after Hollywood BASIC shut down, but their music lived on. In 2005, previously recorded material was released as Brothers From the Mother, before the brothers reunited for House of Stone in 2007, working with artists including Mike G of the Jungle Brothers, YZ and Vast Aire. More than three decades later, they are still connected to hip-hop and the arts. Dumi Right is based in Washington, D.C. and teaches hip-hop at George Washington University’s Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. He has continued recording and performing, and in 2025 released the album Foreword to the Future through Chuck D’s SpitSlam label. Akim Funk Buddha went on to build a career as a multidisciplinary performance artist, combining hip-hop, beatboxing, dance, martial arts, circus performance and even Mongolian throat singing. His work has taken him to major stages and cultural programmes around the world. Zimbabwe Legit’s story is an important piece of both Zimbabwean and African hip-hop history. Before African hip-hop became a global force, two brothers from Zimbabwe were already carrying it into American studios during hip-hop’s golden era. 🇿🇼
