R600 million is being allocated to prevent the loss of life and damage to property. We’ve been here before and seen looting and destruction of property on a massive scale.

Whether you agree with the approach or not, decisions of this nature are ultimately judged on outcomes rather than emotions. The real question is whether the state is effectively addressing the underlying issues that gave rise to the situation in the first place.

I beg to differ on this one.

The R600 million budget is not being allocated to “fight” South Africans. The primary purpose of such expenditure is to ensure that the law is upheld, public order is maintained, and lives are protected during what is expected to be a large-scale national event.

Whether one agrees with the amount being spent is a separate debate and a fair one to have. Taxpayers are entitled to question government expenditure and demand accountability. However, it is important to distinguish between spending on law enforcement and public safety, and the idea that the state is preparing to wage war against its own citizens.

The real question should be whether the budget is justified, transparent, and being used efficiently to protect both the constitutional right to protest and the safety of all those involved.
