PRESS RELEASE

Mzansi Music Ensemble has performed in South Africa’s most prestigious theatre venues, staged four performances in the UK, namely the Barbican Theatre London, and around the UK in 2007, also performed in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The Ensemble dedicated to performing South African music genres, Mbhaqanga, African Jazz and Township big band sounds celebrates great musical works in an impressive display of raw talent, leaving audiences spellbound as they weave, praise singing, voice and improvisation by a 14-piece big band and 10 voices.
The Ensemble is the brain child of the late Victor Ntoni a composer, arranger, bassist and vocalist who died in 2013; studied harmony arranging and composition at Berkley College of Music in Boston, USA through a scholarship facilitated by the late Dave Brubeck. Ntoni first met the Brubecks in 1976 while on tour in South Africa with The New Brubeck Quartet. Although the tour was not in contravention of the cultural boycott, the quartet felt it contradicted the principle of isolating apartheid South Africa and decided to use the tour to promote change. ‘Papa Dave’, as Victor always called him, decided the tour should go ahead if certain conditions were met. He demanded unrestricted access to all concerts by people of all races, a local African support act and the addition of a black South African bass player. This is how the Brubecks met Victor Ntoni a renowned jazz bass player.
Ntoni is the composer and arranger of the music that will be performed; he mentored most of the musicians working tirelessly to create a national memory through the Mzansi Ensemble.
The production will honour the renowned world icon, Nelson Mandela, presenting a vibrant, witty and colourful production celebrating the legacy of this great icon.

MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE MZANSI MUSIC ENSEMBLE PERFORMS A TRIBUTE TO VICTOR NTONI.
The country’s first music ensemble dedicated to performing classics and compositions of our time, Mzansi Music Ensemble will perform a Tribute to Victor Ntoni, following to its previous performances in March, May, June, end July to August 2015 at Gallagher Estate, State Theatre, Market Theatre, African Union Gala Dinner in Sandton Convention Centre and Soweto Theatre. In appreciation to South Africa’s linguistic diversity, the newly launched Ensemble celebrates great works in an impressive display of raw talent, leaving audiences spellbound as they weave poetry, praise singing, voice and improvisation by an 18 piece big band and 11 voices.
Characterised by robust energy Mzansi Music Ensemble plays a positive and dynamic role in the community, demonstrating the pursuit of excellence, collaboration, community service, innovation, as well as sound and creativity management practices.
The project is founded by The Gauteng Music Development, an Initiative of the late Victor Ntoni whose long time vision was to have such an ensemble, and who in the latter years of his life wrote big band scores that were never performed in anticipation that one day such an ensemble will exist. The majority of the musicians that make part of the ensemble were mentored by Ntoni himself who worked tirelessly to create a national memory through the Gauteng Music Development. This tour is a continuation of his legacy.
Like numerous music ensembles all over the world dedicated to the preservation, and promoting composer works, the Gauteng Music Development management coordinates mentorship clinics with established musicians to developing the new upcoming musicians, thus fostering inter-generational collaboration through interactions and rehearsals that yield further training on presentation as well as exploring great compositions by fore bearers. The Ensemble will be having performances throughout the year featuring music of different artists, each being dedicated to a specific genre or artists.
Mzansi Music Ensemble will showcase as a 30 piece big band featuring a song bird Khanyo Maphumulo singing the music of the late legendary Busi Mhlongo, poet and singer Jessica Mbangeni, Saxophonist and mentor Barney Rachabane, Mthunzi Mvubu, Mpho Mabogoane, Gabriel Stuurman, Reuben Malgas and Khanya Ceza amongst its talent pool conducted by musical director Prince Lengoasa, this repertoire includes Sandile Shanges’s music, on the 14th of November 2015 in the prestigious Drama Theatre at the Durban Playhouse. Also intended to form part of the same repertoire was Sipho Gumede’s music, but due to the unforeseen circumstances Bra Sipho’s music is cancelled. Booking details www.playhousecompany.com.
