Fun fact: I only wore school shoes until gr5. Grade 6 n 7, I wore Carvela, which were handed down to me by my aunt. I had two pairs. One black with knotted tassels on the top of the foot. The other, shinny snake skin textured leather. I switched between the shoes until they were ultimately finished… My high school years I opted for a grasshopper, which wasn’t so popular during that time. 2009… it was mostly worn by tymers who were supposedly losers. First day in grade 8, at Queens High, I rocked my elevated rubber sole leather grasshopper. It was black… boys n girls that time who didn’t comprehend style… threw words such as “bumpa sfebe”, but I carried on rocking my very rare piece of fashion to school. Until 2 years later, everyone started wearing di “bumper sfebe”.

Exciting News! Join us at 16 on Lerotholi Gallery for the opening reception of our new exhibition "Umphakathi" on August 20, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM!

Embrace the essence of community as we explore the meaning of "Umphakathi" - a space at the center of it all.

In collaboration with Ofentse Seshabela Studio, we are thrilled to present this extraordinary exhibition, showcasing the incredible creations of young artists who participated in the transformative "Umphakathi Playshops."

Ofentse Seshabela Studio facilitated these "playshops" with a vision to create a communal space of care and development for young artists. They brought together six talented artists/mentors, each specializing in diverse mediums, to share their invaluable knowledge. The result? A journey of growth, exploration, and self-discovery for these young creatives.

Inspired by the belief that even at the margins of one world, we can find our place at the center of our own, these young artists have poured their hearts and souls into their artwork. Their pieces reflect the vicissitudes of life, love, and death - experiences that shape us as individuals and unite us as a community.

We invite you to join us in this celebration of creativity and unity, to envision what our community can look like, to reflect on our responsibilities towards each other, and to nurture spaces of possibility and resistance. Witness the power of art that emerges from the heart of the community. See you on August 20, 2023 at 16 on Lerotholi Gallery from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM!
