From meaningful exchanges between artists, galleries, collectors and curators, to the vibrant energy of our Nigeria Focus programme, RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2026 reaffirmed its commitment to creating space for contemporary African art and its wider cultural community to thrive.

“The location continues to delight visitors with its cobbled paths leading to new art discoveries and bubbling brooks and lush gardens, engendering this idea that you are enjoying a day out somewhere foreign,” says Mary Corrigall in her review of our Fair.

Robert Hodgins was born in Dulwich, London, and immigrated to South Africa in 1938. Despite exhibiting since the early 1950s, he only gained wider recognition in the 1980s, when he began satirising figures of power, a body of work significant enough to earn a major retrospective at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in 1986.

An expressionistic painter and graphic artist, Hodgins is known for recurring icons: malevolent businessmen in pinstriped suits, prison cells, and political tyrants. Working in oil, acrylic, tempera, and various graphic media, he used colour, space, and placement as powerful tools alongside the human form. He exhibited extensively across South Africa, London, France, the United States, and the Netherlands for over six decades.

Continuing our artist spotlight, today we look at Dada Khanyisa. Khanyisa studied Digital Animation before completing a Bachelor of Arts degree. Working primarily with painted wooden assemblages, Khanyisa examines contemporary South African culture, transforming ordinary scenes into reflections of the nation’s broader social, economic, and cultural dynamics. Their playful compositions primarily feature hand-carved figures set against layered, three-dimensional backdrops made from painted surfaces, collaged elements and found objects. Khanyisa’s lively characters often draw on collective histories to comment on and question contemporary matters.

Claire Johnson lives and works in Cape Town, where she graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art (PG Dip).

Johnson’s practice examines the shifting relationship between objects, memory, meaning, and time. Her work begins with fragments of discarded fabric, “oddment batches” pulled from the floors of tailors and dressmakers. Johnson assembles these fabric remnants into provisional compositions. These are not reconstructions but arrangements laid side by side, bleeding into one another. Fabric is a means for Johnson to hold a narrative for a moment, while allowing it to remain unsettled.

What a moment! A look back at the announcement of the 2026 Lexus Best Stand Award & Audience Award at RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2026.

Presented in recognition of a booth that demonstrated exceptional conceptual coherence, visual impact, originality and spatial presentation, the Lexus Best Stand Award celebrates the thoughtful and inventive ways galleries and artists shape how work is experienced at the Fair. From the diversity of mediums on display to the overall quality of presentation, the award honours stand that left a lasting impression on both the selection committee and audiences alike.

Congratulations once again to Reservoir and Dada Khanyisa, and thank you to all exhibitors whose booths transformed Shepstone Gardens into a dynamic and inspiring meeting place for contemporary art from across the continent.

A special thank you as well to our dedicated selection committee for their time, insight, and careful consideration throughout the judging process.

The inaugural DLO Energy Resources Group Artist Prize has been awarded to Nwabisa Ntlokwana!

The acquisition-based award reflects DLO Energy’s commitment to investing in the continent’s cultural and creative economies alongside its work in infrastructure development.

DLO’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Linda Mabhena-Olagunju: "Today, through the DLO Energy Resources Group Artist Prize, we are making a deliberate statement: African female artists deserve more than applause. And too much of Africa's creative brilliance leaves our continent and hangs in spaces we may never enter. Meanwhile, many of the artists shaping global culture still struggle financially despite the discipline, talent and economic value they create. That has to change."

More works from Ntlokwana remain available as part of RMB Latitudes' INDEX. Explore Ntlokwana's works on Latitudes Online: https://latitudes.online/
