CHINESE / LUNAR NEW YEAR - Johannesburg

Thank you to the Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe for offering protection and dispelling evil spirits during the Year of the Fire Horse for everyone who attended the Chinatown Johannesburg Community Committee’s Chinese New Year Festival in Cyrildene this past Saturday.

The dragon weaved among the large crowds along Derrick Avenue to the banging of drums and clanging of cymbals. The lion grabbed the hanging leafy greens offered by each shop in its mouth and then spat it out, scattering prosperity across the business for a successful year ahead. Owners thanked the performers for the blessing by presenting them with a red envelope.

Look out for them inside today’s edition of The Citizen newspaper.
