Spaza Art Gallery

Spaza Art Gallery The Spaza Art Gallery was started in Troyeville 2001 .Spaza Gallery’s vision is to showcase all types of artists and from all over South Africa.

The gallery acts as a venue for a wide range of activities including exhibitions, poetry readings, music, workshops, theatre and comedy. Spaza Art Gallery has held exhibitions of works by artists from almost every province of South Africa. These works have ranged from small naive paintings to major sculptures, and the exhibitions were usually accompanied by music, dance and poetry by members of th

e community. It has the I Themba tower of hope in the sculpture garden where the small spaza gallery is also housed.

Yesterday at Main St Sundays, Spaza Art was invited to create a large-scale street mandala with the public.
Built through movement, play, and participation; children and passersby becoming part of the artwork.
For us, these works are about bringing community together, shared authorship, and activating public space
If you saw or shared it, you were part of it, thank-you.

By the end of the day, it was washed away.

Like the Buddhist sand mandala where intricate works are carefully made, then swept away, reminding us of impermanence, of letting go, of presence over possession.

It was a lot like that and also… it raises a question.

What would it mean for the city to hold onto something like this?
To choose beauty, play, and participation not just for a moment, but as a permanent part of our streets?

THE SEA STARTS HERE. The ridge that runs from west to east of Johannesburg forms a watershed. All the rain that falls to the south of the ridge flows eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. All the rain that falls north of the ridge flows to the Indian Ocean. This mosaic celebrated the Joburgs Watershed. It's situated in Braamfontein in a little urban oasis on the walkway behind Joburg Theatre CNR Simmonds & Ammeshof.
