Come join us in celebrating Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! parade as we embark on a mystical adventure of time travel through dreaming. This year promises even more wonder and entanglement as we move through the streets as portals into the past, the future and the
now. The playdate is again curated by of and in collaboration with the Windybrow Arts Centre.

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! launched in 2017 and returns this year, its 6th iteration, in celebration of the possibilities that public performance brings to public space; to spread energy, laughter, surprise and provocation and to make visible the wonderful work
that several organisations and individuals have continued to do in this complex area regardless of the challenges. A collaborative melange between local youth organisations; Dlala Nje, Shade, Dlamini Foundation, Johannesburg Society for the Blind, Innovation of Excellence, Lefika La Phodiso, Fight with Insight, MES and the Windybrow Arts Centre. We welcome back our favourites, the Ezase Vaal Brass Band who sonically lead and weave us through worlds upon the parade. Another highlight joining us from the sky this year is the Cirk, a descending razzle. The materials supplied by our partners - African Reclaimers Organisation, where waste is being transformed into art and costumes, and the waste reclaimer bag forms the visual language of the entire parade, an homage to the peripheral purveyors themselves.

The parade starts at 10am from the Windybrow, followed by our music concert featuring Thamsanqa Vuthela Band, Madagascar’s - The Dizzy Brains and Styles Da Deejay of The Creators Room. Come travel time with us.

This day was inspired by the life of Joburg public art super-heroine Lesley Perkes who died in 2015 and who had dreams for this place that others have continued to manifest. Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala would not be possible without the generous support from Arkham’s CID, Badboys Security, Hillbrow Police, , CCBSA, , , and our media partner Johannesburg in your Pocket.

Just a few more moons away - Saturday 02 September Brixton will be glowing.

Months of work has gone into preparing, rehearsing and curating this community festival.

Many many hands have played roles. Residents have donated time, food, paint, labour, their homes and expertise.

This has been a magical collective effort from 100s within the community, and from friends of Brixton. We cannot contain our excitement for what is in store.

Please Uber to event as parking is so very limited. There will be food and drinks on sale at the market. Performances start from 4pm at the market through to 9pm.

We have over 300 performers and artists on the parade! Come enjoy our offerings.
