Our Story
The Blacks Only Comedy Show, presented by Real Concerts has become a staple in the South African entertainment landscape, with the event invariably selling out. Blacks Only Comedy was founded 12 years ago and has been presented to over one million South Africans, in cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and P.E. MC. David Kau needs little introduction as his name is synonymous with many firsts. This Kroonstad-born comic began his career as the first black stand-up comedian in the 1998 Smirnoff Comedy Festival in Cape Town. He was the only black person on stage out of 44 comics. "I'd never had experience in stand-up comedy," recalls David, "the first comedy show I ever saw was the first one I was inβ. David soon grew tired of the fact that there wasn't a space for black stand-up comedians to showcase their work in their own languages. So began the inception of the Blacks Only comedy shows. What started as a one-night-only affair in 2004, is now in its twelfth year - occurring 3 or 4 times a year. The show now travels to Cape Town, Durban and Bloemfontein's Macufe Arts Festival. As a comedy first, Blacks Only catapulted David into an instant household name and proved that he is indeed a forerunner in the comedy industry. The line-up consists of award-winning comedians, as well as up-and-coming young comedians, who will soon become household names.
