African Street Paper Art

African Street Paper Art The African Street Paper Art Group create art using recycled materials.

The African Street Paper Art Group was started at St Luke’s, in Orchards, Johannesburg, in 2012. St Luke’s runs a weekly stew kitchen where most of the guests are unemployed men, and many are homeless. Training workshops were initiated to give the men skills with found materials, mainly paper and sticks that were chosen to reduce loss in the event of goods being stolen or confiscated, due to them

being homeless. A core group of artists has emerged, with a studio at Paterson Park Recreation Centre, and storage space at the Community AIDS Response, Norwood. Working daily on a range of unique items, made entirely from recycled materials (apart from glue and acrylic glaze), the artists continually develop new techniques and ideas. The item you are holding is a result of the training they have received, and hours of work by one of the men.
