of South Africa was established in April 1997 through an act of parliament

The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC), formed in 1997, is a statutory public entity with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) as its executive authority. The institution is subject to a complex governance framework that includes the NAC Act (1997) and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) amongst others. The NAC is governed by a Council whose members are appointed by the Minister

of Arts and Culture after a process of public nominations. The current Council was appointed in August 2006 and was inaugurated in September 2006.

Meet Vas Putter, a beneficiary of the National Arts Council Annual Project Funding, currently exhibiting her striking piece, "What Lies Beneath", at INDEX 2026 taking place at Shepstone Gardens. Proudly supported by the NAC and RMB Latitudes Art Fair, her work breathes new life into surplus materials to shed light on the often-hidden environmental and human costs of production. By using mirror elements, she challenges patrons to recognize their own complicity within the global supply chain.
