As we close Daring darkness and still, it is holy, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who made this exhibition possible and meaningful.

To our incredible participating artists — Bongani Mabulu, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Odirile Khune, Katlego Tshuma, Mncedi Madolo, Nomfundo Indondo and Thokozani Mthiyane — thank you for trusting us with your work, your stories and your visions. Focus | Figurative and Abstract

Artworks presented in Daring darkness and still, it is holy exist in the rich space between figuration and abstraction. They reveal enough for us to recognise fragments of the known world, yet withhold enough to keep interpretation open.

This ambiguity is possibility. Nomfundo Indondo Mkhize’s practice embodies this fluidity with remarkable sensitivity. Her works oscillate effortlessly between the figurative and the abstract and through this movement, she explores memory and presence as experiences that are never entirely fixed, but continually evolving.

In resisting rigid definition, these works remind us that sometimes the greatest gift is the freedom to inhabit many truths at once.

Focus | Abstract

Within Daring darkness and still, it is holy, abstraction becomes a language of intuition and oftentimes memory. Rather than offering fixed narratives, these works create spaces where meaning unfolds slowly, inviting each viewer to bring their own experiences into conversation with the artwork.

The practices of Thokozani Mthiyane and Mongezi Ncaphayi exemplify this openness. Through gesture, colour, material, and mark-making, both artists construct visual worlds that resist certainty. Their works become places of pause, encouraging introspection instead of instruction and reflection instead of resolution.In this freedom lies something profoundly human.

Sometimes, the most meaningful encounters are those that leave us wondering a little longer.

Mongezi Ncaphayi
At the beginning of the conceptual journey for Daring Darkness, and still, it is holy was The Prayer by Mongezi Ncaphayi, a work that quietly shaped the exhibition’s exploration of vulnerability, reflection, and healing.

Recognised for his distinctive abstract visual language, Ncaphayi creates compositions where structured geometric forms meet the fluid movement of paint. This dialogue between precision and spontaneity creates a tension, inviting viewers to linger in moments of uncertainty rather than seeking immediate resolution.

For Ncaphayi, the movement of colour and gesture is inseparable from the process itself. Within that process lies vulnerability, an openness that allows the work to evolve organically and honestly.
Echoing the exhibition’s curatorial premise, The Prayer invites us to reflect on what we often avoid: the difficult conversations, unresolved histories, and quiet spaces of discomfort. It reminds us that healing is not always found in certainty, but in the willingness to remain present with vulnerability and to allow transformation through it.

For Odirile Khune, denim is far more than a material. It becomes a powerful metaphor for the resilience of the human spirit.
Working with discarded denim and worn garments, Khune transforms everyday fabrics into compelling works of art that speak to identity and lived experience. Through the careful process of cutting, stitching, and reassembling, each artwork becomes an act of renewal, where materials once marked by wear are given new purpose and meaning.

Much like the human experience, denim bears the marks of time, endurance, and transformation. Every texture, seam, and layer reflects narratives of perseverance, inviting viewers to consider the complexities that shape our individual and collective identities.
Within Daring Darkness, and still, it is holy, Khune’s practice reminds us that healing is not the erasure of hardship, but the quiet and courageous act of transforming it into something enduring, beautiful, and deeply human.

Katlego Tshuma’s Sangu Half Curve Bench reimagines the traditional sangu mat through contemporary craftsmanship. Its sculptural folds recall the gentle act of unfolding a mat, an enduring gesture of welcome, gathering, and belonging. In transforming a familiar cultural object into a space for conversation, Tshuma invites us to reflect on how design can carry history while imagining new futures.
As a multidisciplinary designer and artist, Tshuma approaches each work as a solution to both practical and social questions, creating objects that encourage connection and dialogue.

Bongani Mabulu has remained unwavering in his commitment to fearless social commentary. His practice confronts narratives often left unspoken, revealing the complexities, contradictions, and resilience woven into the Black experience with uncompromising honesty.

Within Daring darkness and still, it is holy, Mabulu turns his attention to the Black woman, celebrating her strength, endurance, and sacred presence. These works honour women as guardians of memory and carriers of generations, inviting us to look beyond representation towards recognition. They ask us to see the extraordinary within the Black female figure and to reflect on the histories, dignity, and power she embodies.

Artist Focus | Mncedi Madolo

Mncedi Madolo’s practice explores the evolution of African customs, cultural identity, and the ways they shift as they move from rural landscapes into contemporary urban life. Rooted in his own journey from the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg, his work reflects a deep curiosity about the visual languages that shape how we understand ourselves, our histories, and our communities.

Working at the intersection of memory, archive, and identity, Madolo asks how personal experience contributes to a broader understanding of Black life. Through layered imagery, found materials, and bold visual references, his canvases become living archives where the Black body, voice, and lived experience are honoured as vital forms of memory, knowledge, and cultural continuity.

Artist Focus | Thokozani Mthiyane

Working within the language of abstract expressionism, Thokozani Mthiyane’s practice is less concerned with arriving than with becoming. Each gesture, each mark and each layer of paint records a fleeting moment that can never be repeated. For Mthiyane, the value of an artwork lies not in perfection, but in presence, recognising that every moment is complete simply because it has been lived.

This philosophy finds quiet expression in works such as Constellation Within and Quiet Fire. At the heart of Quiet Fire rests a single circle, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi; an appreciation of impermanence, simplicity and imperfection. Created in one continuous gesture, it cannot be corrected or repeated. It simply exists as it is, becoming a meditation on life’s natural rhythms and the beauty of embracing the present moment.

Together, these works invite us to slow down. Every brushstroke carries intention, and every composition honours the unfolding of time. Mthiyane reminds us that beauty often reveals itself not through flawlessness, but through authenticity.
