Artist: Ursh Makhunga

Ursh Makhunga is a visual artist born in Durban and raised in the East of Gauteng. One of the central themes in Ursh's work is the realization of self in relation to the world with a particular interest in the ways that people construct their identities and navigate the complexities of the world around them. She employs a variety of media, such as drawing, painting, digital painting, illustration, and sculpture, to explore themes that are meaningful and reflect a unique perspective on the world. She draws inspiration from African spirituality and mysticism, with a strong belief in a deep connection between our inner selves and the natural world, and seeks to explore this connection through her practice.

Artist: Nompumelelo Mdluli

"Nompumelelo (Lelo) Mdluli is a 28yr old Art Director by profession at one of South Africa's leading advertising agency, with experience in graphic design and interests in packaging and UX/UI design.
She's also a founder of a haircare brand that helps with hair loss, called Miss Morning.

To break away from her daily duties, she illustrates; her work is centred around women and explores spirituality and mental health. However, most of her time an illustrator is consumed by children's books, where she illustrates, designs and sometimes edits the books. To-date, she has worked on ten titles - her most recent work being Pharaoh's African Chronicles: a four-part book series that takes children on a historical adventure of the mighty kings of Africa. Artist: Buqaqawuli Nobakada

"Buqaqawuli Nobakada uses a slow and delicate process of preparing her own paper or canvas with lace material to create a delicate environment for black women’s privacy and for the sanctity of their rich interiority. Using tools from her short background in architecture: the artist designs luxurious domestic worlds utilising images of imagined interiors she finds in home magazines and social media.
Nobakada’s primary focus is re-representing the portrayed identity, but in a state of abundance and serene repose. The work is about intimacy with self and with eachother, it is about creating an air of completion and satisfaction, because once we know the extent to which we are capable of feeling completion and satisfaction; we can bring ourselves closer to that fullness in other areas of our lives.

“..self connection shared is a measure of the joy which I know myself to be capable of feeling, a reminder of my capacity for feeling. And that deep irreplaceable knowledge of my capacity for joy comes to demand from all of my life that it be lived within the knowledge that such satisfaction is possible, and does not have to be called marriage, nor god, nor an afterlife.”
-Audre Lorde, Uses of the Erotic: The erotic as power"
