This September, Everard Read returns to FNB Art Joburg with “ASPIRATIONAL”, a vibrant presentation of new and recent work by artists from across the gallery’s programme.⁣
⁣
In Johannesburg, a city built on reinvention and sustained by resilience, we offered our artists a single point of departure: Aspirational. Interpreted freely, the idea has taken many forms through abstraction and figuration, contradiction and critique, hope, ambition and imagination.⁣
⁣
At a moment when uncertainty often dominates the conversation, “ASPIRATIONAL” looks elsewhere: towards possibility. The presentation celebrates creativity as a conduit for optimism, resilience and ambition, bringing together a body of work that feels energetic, generous and alive.⁣

This weekend, Everard Read returns to FNB Art Joburg with “ASPIRATIONAL”, bringing together new and recent work by artists from across the gallery’s programme.⁣
⁣
Taking Johannesburg, a city shaped by reinvention and sustained by resilience, as its context, artists were invited to respond freely to a single point of departure: Aspirational. Across abstraction and figuration, the resulting works explore the idea through contradiction and critique, hope, ambition and imagination.⁣
⁣
At a time when uncertainty so often shapes the conversation, “ASPIRATIONAL” turns towards possibility, considering creativity as a conduit for optimism, resilience and ambition. The presentation brings together a body of work that is energetic, generous and alive.⁣
⁣
Featured artists include Andrzej Urbanski, Atang Tshikare, Bambo Sibiya, Blessing Ngobeni, Brett Murray, Gerhard Marx, Mary Sibande, Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi, Norman Catherine, Stephen Langa, Teresa Kutala Firmino, Wayne Barker and Zander Blom, alongside a solo booth by Lady Skollie.⁣

FNB Art Joburg Solo Booth | Lady Skollie | ON MY KNEES (IN A BAD WAY)⁣

This September, Lady Skollie presents a solo booth at FNB Art Joburg 2026 with “ON MY KNEES (IN A BAD WAY)”, an exploration of all the ways an artist is brought to the brink.⁣
⁣
A life committed to making is filled with whimsy, obsession and a strange suspension of time. You disappear into it. Hours collapse. The world falls away. Until, without warning, life comes crashing back in.⁣
⁣
The banal. The brutal. The unavoidable.⁣
⁣
Suddenly, the ground that felt solid begins to shift. Sand slips away beneath your feet, and you are left searching for something to grasp onto. This is the artist on her knees: exposed, exhausted, overwhelmed, but still making. Because even when everything else feels uncertain, the work continues.⁣
⁣
“ON MY KNEES (IN A BAD WAY)” pulls away the veil on the romantic idea of the artist’s life, revealing something more complicated underneath: the constant push and pull between creation and survival, pleasure and pain, LIFE & DEATH, and how closely they can exist alongside one another.⁣

Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi | Whispers of the Past, Wisdom of the Future⁣

Sebidi’s exhibition at Everard Read CIRCA came to a meaningful close with the screening of a behind-the-scenes documentary, offering a rare glimpse into her creative process and exploring the working methods, inspirations and approach to storytelling that inform her practice.⁣
⁣
In “Whispers of the Past, Wisdom of the Future”, Sebidi brought together painting and printmaking to reflect on the enduring relationship between ancestral knowledge, community and creative exchange. The exhibition highlighted the collaborative nature of her practice, acknowledging the artists, printmakers and institutions that contributed to her remarkable artistic journey.⁣

Join us on Saturday, 5 September at 10:00 for a curator-led walkabout of exhibitions by Atang Tshikare and Karel Nel.⁣
⁣
Meaning both “air” and “spirit”, Atang Tshikare’s “Mowa” explores African ideas of transcendence through systems of spiritual ascent rooted in Tswana, Sotho and Pedi metaphysical thought. The exhibition considers the tension between visible order and invisible chaos: the structured world we inhabit and the unseen ancestral, emotional and spiritual forces that shape human transformation.⁣
⁣
The works in Nel’s exhibition, “Translucent Worlds”, are distillations of experiences gathered from Nel’s own life’s journey, and by extension, from those of others. Journeys such as these have layered Nel’s consciousness through his own travels to places including Brâncuși’s studio, the temples of Kyoto and Nara, Uppsala and Linnaeus’s university, as well as the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm. In turn, these places have brought him to new insights that flow into the works presented in this exhibition.⁣

In anticipation of Karel Nel's exhibition at Everard Read CIRCA, we visited the artist's studio for a rare insight into his artistic world.⁣
⁣
The works in this exhibition are distillations of experiences gathered from Nel's own life's journey, and by extension from those of others. He reflects on the haiku that the Japanese poet Bashō wrote in “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”, and on the hundred woodcuts that Hokusai created of views of sacred Mount Fuji. Nel also considers the visual poems of Hiroshige's series of woodcuts, produced in the 1830s after his first travels along the Tōkaidō road connecting Edo to the imperial capital, Kyoto.⁣
⁣
His thoughts extend to the sculptor Brâncuși, who walked from Romania to Paris, and to Gauguin's long journey from Marseilles to Tahiti in search of escape from the rampant industrialisation he witnessed in Europe.⁣
⁣

As we approach the closing of “Whispers of the Past, Wisdom of the Future”, we invite you to join us tomorrow for a special screening celebrating the remarkable practice of Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi.

The 10-minute documentary offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into Sebidi’s creative process, exploring her working methods, inspirations and approach to storytelling through art.

The screening will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, 22 August, marking the closing of the exhibition at CIRCA Gallery.

Join us for this intimate look into the creative world of one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists.

John Meyer | Mandela – A Life's Journey

Curator's Choice at Everard Read.

John Meyer’s Mandela series goes beyond the familiar imagery of a global icon, offering a portrait shaped by observation, atmosphere and the quieter moments of an extraordinary life.

Through his distinctive realist approach, Meyer reconstructs scenes from Mandela’s journey with remarkable attention to detail, from his early years and the struggle against apartheid to the complexities of leadership and life beyond the presidency. The paintings invite us to consider not only the historical figure, but the individual behind the photographs and public record.

Meyer’s ability to combine meticulous realism with a cinematic sense of narrative brings a sense of immediacy to these moments, allowing history to unfold through the details of gesture, place and human interaction.

A selection of limited-edition prints from the series is currently on view as part of Everard Read’s Curator’s Choice at the Johannesburg gallery, until 22 August 2026.
