Jeanne Hoffman | Gardening Fragments

Jeanne Hoffman explores the emotional and socio-cultural dimensions of place, drawing on fragmented recollections and multiple viewpoints from her everyday environment. Working between collage and painting, she assembles referential forms in relation to one another, creating spaces where movement, dialogue and meaning emerge.

In “Gardening Fragments”, Hoffman approaches painting as a process of assembling and tending to fragments. Rooted in Roger Robinson’s idea of “A Portable Paradise”, the exhibition considers what is carried, concealed and returned to in moments of pressure.

Through repetition, adjustment and return, the works open up contemplative spaces where landscape is both constructed and remembered.

Presented in the Chapel space at Shepstone Gardens, the Everard Read booth brought together a curated selection of works by both emerging and established artists across painting, sculpture and mixed media. Unfolding within this year’s “Oasis” theme, the presentation considered ideas of renewal, connection and engagement within the unique setting of the fair.

This year’s theme, “Oasis”, reflects on the ways creativity flourishes in unexpected places. Marking 140 years of Johannesburg, the theme considers how art, like water, sustains and regenerates life, offering moments of connection, renewal and discovery.

Set across the historic gardens and architecture of Shepstone Gardens, the fair brings together galleries, artists and collectors from across Africa and its extended communities in an immersive environment that encourages meaningful engagement with contemporary art.

Everard Read Johannesburg will present a curated group exhibition in the Chapel (Booth D1), featuring works by Lady Skollie, Guy du Toit and Brett Murray, alongside a broader selection of works by both emerging and established artists.

Win the FIRST edition of Guy du Toit’s new sculpture “Cygnets”.

Guy du Toit, in collaboration with Everard Read Gallery, has donated the first edition of “Cygnets” (1/16), a sculpture inspired by the iconic “Dance of the Cygnets” from “Swan Lake”. The work was conceived following du Toit’s attendance at a Joburg Ballet performance at RMB Starlight Classics in 2025, reimagining his signature hares as dancers en pointe - playful, elegant and full of movement.

The fundraising initiative is limited to 300 participants. Each R1,000 donation to Joburg Ballet’s Pointe Shoe Fund qualifies as one entry, with the winner receiving the first edition of “Cygnets”, valued at R90,000. Proceeds will go directly towards supporting young dancers with essential training resources, including pointe shoes.

A curated selection of Guy du Toit’s hare sculptures will also be presented in Everard Read Johannesburg’s exhibition in the Chapel (Booth D1) at RMB Latitudes Art Fair.

Nicola Bailey is known for paintings and drawings that explore the relationship between humans and animals, often using dogs as recurring subjects. Her work combines close observation with an interest in perception, memory and consciousness, creating images that feel both intimate and contemplative.

In “Between Dog and Wolf / Entre Chien et Loup”, Bailey extends these concerns into sculpture, considering the shared terrain between human and animal experience and the unknowable nature of animals dreaming.

In the lead-up to the RMB Latitudes Art Fair, this year’s theme “Oasis” unfolds across the gardens through a series of outdoor projects that invite engagement with art beyond the traditional gallery setting.

As part of the programme, Everard Read Johannesburg presents a curated group exhibition in the Chapel (Booth D1), led by curator Gina Molle. Conceived as an open and accessible presentation, the booth brings together works by both emerging and established artists, including sculpture by Guy du Toit and Brett Murray.

Reflecting on the fair, Molle considers the activation of outdoor space as a dialogue between artwork, architecture and environment - where light, scale and landscape shape the experience of each piece. She also encourages collectors to approach sculpture not as decoration, but as a defining element within a space, capable of anchoring and transforming its surroundings.

On 14 May, Everard Read Johannesburg presents “Sophie’s Closet” with “MANTSHO” featuring “Stoned Cherrie Home” - a collaboration bringing together the practices of Mary Sibande, Palesa Mokubung founder of “MANTSHO”, and Nkhensani Nkosi, the creative force behind “Stoned Cherrie Home”.

At the centre of the exhibition is “Sophie” - Sibande’s iconic sculptural figure - whose evolving narrative continues to engage histories of labour, memory and identity. In this presentation, “Sophie” enters a new phase, situated within a dialogue between sculpture, couture and homeware.

Together, Sibande, Mokubung, and Nkosi bring their distinct and complementary visions into conversation - interrogating inherited narratives while conjuring new futures through craftsmanship, colour, and image-making. Art. Fashion. Home. The three spaces where identity is built and lived.

For the duration of the exhibition, “MANTSHO” will take up residence within the gallery, transforming the space into an environment where garments, objects and artworks are brought into relation.

In celebration of Everard Read Johannesburg’s female artists, we present a selection of exhibitions spanning sculpture, painting and contemporary practice.

Jeanne Hoffman’s “Gardening Fragments” approaches painting as a process of assembling and tending to fragments, drawing together geographical, political and psychological landscapes.

Nicola Bailey’s “Between Dog and Wolf / Entre Chien et Loup” reflects on perception, consciousness and the quiet connection between human and animal worlds through her distinctive drawing practice.

Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi’s work, currently included in our programme, continues to affirm her position as one of South Africa’s most significant artistic voices, grounded in memory, spirituality and lived experience.

Mary Sibande’s “Sophie’s Closet”, in collaboration with fashion designer Palesa Mokubung of MANTSHO, bringing together Sibande’s iconic character "Sophie" with Mokubung’s visionary couture practice. They explore the evolving narrative of her iconic figure "Sophie" through sculpture and couture, bringing together histories of labour, identity and self-possession.

Together, these works offer a perspective on the depth and breadth of contemporary women’s practice within the gallery.

Everard Read presents “Gardening Fragments”, an upcoming exhibition by Jeanne Hoffman. Drawing on Roger Robinson’s idea of a “portable paradise”, the work considers what is carried, concealed, and returned to in moments of pressure.

Jeanne Hoffman’s practice approaches painting as a process of assembling and tending to fragments. Rooted in collage, her work brings together geographical, political and psychological landscapes, where disparate elements are held in relation and allowed to evolve over time.

Through a process of repetition, adjustment and return, each work forms part of a wider continuum, where fragments are revisited, reconfigured and carried forward. Meaning emerges through this ongoing exchange, where landscape is both constructed and remembered.

Gardening Fragments opens on 14 May at Everard Read Gallery Johannesburg.

As La Biennale di Venezia approaches, Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi’s participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition, curated by Koyo Kouoh, stands as a significant inclusion.

Born in 1943 in Marapyane, Sebidi is recognised as one of South Africa’s most significant artistic voices. Her practice is deeply informed by early teachings from her grandmother and grounded in the making traditions of rural life - from mural painting and clay work to weaving, beading and drawing. These foundations continue to shape a body of work that engages spirituality, memory and lived experience, often reflecting on personal and collective histories within South Africa.

Over decades, Sebidi has contributed to the cultural landscape not only through her work, but through mentorship and a sustained commitment to creativity as a transformative and spiritual act. Her inclusion in Biennale Arte 2026 marks an important international recognition of this legacy, placing her practice within a global contemporary discourse.

Biennale Arte 2026 runs from 9 May to 22 November 2026 (preview 6-8 May) across the Giardini, the Arsenale and various locations in Venice.
