Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Sophiatown, a historic community in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Sophiatown Arts Akademy is an independent space for learning and playing. Its name is indebted to Sophiatown, a place and community in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are located in Brixton, Johannesburg, and work all over the place. Our curriculum works along our diverse senses - seeing, h

earing, smelling, tasting and feeling. And our sixth one - for knowing intuitively, for sounding out, healing, and for listening deep.

​You can take part in a curriculum of six experiences per year; or just join the ones you like or need right now. Our provocateurs are artists, activists and healers from all over the world.

🌍 Art Meets Activism at Sophiatown Arts Akademy! 🎶

Join us as we host BANNED FROM THE LAND for a transformative residency.

✨ What to Expect:
🎤 Performances blending cultural heritage and land activism.
🌱 Discussions raising awareness about climate change and land rights.
📀 A sneak peek into their upcoming interprovincial tour and debut EP, I’M WITH THE BANNED, which honors South Africa’s struggles for equality and land justice.

The Launch Event:

The residency will culminate in an exciting public event featuring:

🎨 Doodle Series Creation

Amandla Akhona and Xhanti Nokwali will lead hands-on sessions translating themes of resistance and solidarity into visual art. These works will become the centerpiece of the final showcase.

🌟 Demonstrations & Talks

Exhibition: A showcase of the doodle series and other creative outputs from the residency.

Community Dialogue: Engage with the artists and share insights on explored themes.

Performance: A live music and storytelling presentation by BANNED FROM THE LAND, offering a preview of their upcoming EP.

Demonstration by Xam Fortuin: Interdisciplinary artist Xam Fortuin shares their creative process and its intersection with activism and resilience.

Discussion with Rez Inyanzi (Mzwanele Tshishonga): Renowned photographer and ceramist from Wits University reflects on capturing South African narratives, land, and identity.

💬 Panel: Unpacking "I’M WITH THE BANNED"
Contemporary Gauteng artists will discuss the role of art in activism, challenges faced by South African creatives, and evolving concepts of solidarity.

📣 Interactive Engagement

Display of collaborative works, including the doodle series, with opportunities for public feedback.

Live performance by BANNED FROM THE LAND, featuring music from their highly anticipated EP.
