This is the Gospel in one image.
Jesus did not just give us His blood…He poured out His very heart. The grapes remind us of communion, the fruit of the vine. But when you see them fused with the heart, you realize: the wine of salvation came at the cost of His life, His love, His heart being broken for us.
Isaiah prophesied, “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief” (Isaiah 53:10). Just as grapes are crushed to make wine, Christ was crushed so that the cup of the New Covenant could be filled. In Gethsemane (literally “the oil press”) He sweat drops of blood as He prayed, “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39).
That cup, once filled with wrath, is now the cup of salvation. “I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.” (Psalm 116:13). Every time we come to the table, we are reminded: this is not ordinary wine. This is covenant wine, born from a crushed Savior’s heart.
And notice the light breaking through the darkness in the painting. It declares: the crushing was not the end. Out of His suffering came life, out of His bruising came healing, and out of His death came resurrection.
So today, when you lift the cup in communion, remember this:
You are drinking from the heart of Christ.
You are partaking of His love poured out.
You are receiving life from the One who was crushed so you could be made whole.
“From His heart flows the wine of salvation. He was crushed so that we might drink life.”
