Calling Creatives: Social Impact Arts Prize Fellowship '26

Are you a creative who engages with, reflects on, or responds to the impact of the global climate crisis on the environment, people, and society?

Social Impact Arts Prize and the Rupert Museum are pleased to invite you to a session of artistic insight, inspiration, and guidance designed to help you shape and write your art project proposal for the Social Impact Arts Prize Fellowship 2026.

The Social Impact Arts Prize Fellowship 2026, supported by the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch, invites creatives to propose an artistic residency in Graaff-Reinet that addresses the climate crisis's impact on the environment, people, and society. The fellowship offers grants to artists, architects, designers, and writers — supporting project development, covering materials, production, local skills, labour, and studio spaces at the Jan Rupert Art Centre, which serves as the Social Impact Arts Hub. The three primary categories include artwork in the landscape, studio-based art, and creative writing projects.

The Social Impact Arts Prize Fellowship 2026, supported by the Rupert Art Foundation and the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch, invites creatives who engage with, reflect on, or respond to the impact of the global climate crisis on the environment, people, and society to submit proposals for an artistic residency in Graaff-Reinet.

The upcoming third edition of the SIAP Fellowship is situated in the Karoo's Valley of Desolation. The fellowship will provide grant funding to practitioners from a range of disciplines - including artists, architects, designers, and, for the first time, writers. The fellows will be supported in various ways to develop their projects over a sustained period, from a week to a month or more, while residing in Graaff-Reinet.

“Graaff-Reinet has been selected as the site for several reasons,” says Hanneli Rupert-Elias, Chairperson of SIAP. “It was the birthplace of my grandfather Anton Rupert, who, alongside my grandmother Huberte, first established the Rupert Art Foundation, which supports our work here. He was a broad thinker who drew inspiration from nature's stillness and wisdom. What better place to host an artistic fellowship than the unique and ancient landscape that Graaff-Reinet offers, which already attracts leading palaeontologists, environmentalists, and visitors from around the globe, and which will hopefully serve as an omnipresent reminder of humans’ place in the world.

Each SIAP Fellow will decide when and for how long they and their collaborative team will reside in Graaff-Reinet in 2026, while developing their projects, including research, development, and ex*****on or installation. They will be accommodated and financially supported, including the cost of materials, production needs, local skills and labour, and the provision of studio and workshop spaces located at the Jan Rupert Art Centre, which will function as the Social Impact Arts Hub.

“Social impact is inherently based on a beneficial change in relational dynamics,” explains SIAP Director, Dr Roelof van Wyk, “on the strengthening and enrichment of ties between people, and within the more-than-human world. We aim to select a diverse and yet aligned set of projects that bring generative insights to an expanded notion of the social.”

>>>Underscoring the SIAP Fellowship's commitment to the local community, the 2026 edition is in partnership with several established cultural and heritage institutions, including the Origins Fossil Centre and the Graaff-Reinet Museum. Fellows can also connect with other local individuals, organisations and the wide range of communities in the development and implementation of their proposed projects.

As an initiative of the Rupert Museum, the SIAP seeks to rethink public access to the arts and the possibility that artworks from disparate traditions could coexist, interact, and transform one another, producing encounters that disturb fixed narratives while allowing new ones to emerge.
