Concerts SA and IKS Cultural Consulting would like to congratulate all the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and 6th Annual Mzantsi Jazz Awards winners!

Of these winners, seven, in particular, have been recipients of the Concerts SA Digital Mobility Funds. More than 10 of the nominees for both the SAMAs and the Mzantsi Jazz Awards were also recipients of either our Digital Mobility Funds, or CSA's support for venues and promoters. These nominees include Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane and Malcolm Jiyane. Many of the artists in the nominees are among the many projects and artists Concerts SA supported over the last two years.

The SAMAs and Mzantsi Jazz Awards winners, that are also DMF recipients, are:

Khanyisile Mthethwa - Best Classical Instrumental Album / Whitestar Newcomer of the Year

Call for ARA Postgraduate Bursaries in the Wits School of Arts 2021

Deadline: 8 January 2021

Wits School of Arts invites applications for the following bursaries that will be awarded by the School under a prestigious grant from the Arts Research Africa project funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.

Honours degrees: 2 bursaries for 2021 @ R90 000 each (full-time)
Master’s degrees: 3 bursaries for 2021 @ R100 000 each (full-time)
Doctoral degree: 1 bursary for 2021 @ R130 000 (full-time)

Please note that the Arts Research Africa Postgraduate Bursary is also available to students who are studying part-time for their degrees. In the case of successful part-time applicants, the bursary will be split over TWO years. For part-time candidates the bursaries will thus be:


Honours degrees: R45 000 + R45 000 each (part-time)

Master’s degrees: R50 000 + R50 000 each (part-time)

Doctoral degree: R65 000 + R65 000 (part-time)

Each bursary is for the duration of one academic year, and the grant will be allocated on academic merit and student need.

• Candidates must have been accepted for their course of study in order to qualify for bursary.
• Closing date: The closing date for applications is 8 January 2021 No late applications will be considered.

• This application form is to be completed by the bursary candidate.
• Once registered on the system, please proceed to "Programs".
• For the section that says, "motivation of why you should be granted the bursary" "upload" your motivation, please note that you are required to fill in the text box on the form.
• When uploading the required supporting documents, it is necessary to hit the "Mark as Complete" button for each uploaded document.
• For financial support documents, you are required to upload either a 3-month bank statement or an affidavit.

The Creative Industries Career Expo is a fresh and unique event providing a platform for learners and youth to easily access information and gain insight into the different careers in the creative, cultural and heritage sectors. Taking place from 11 – 13 March at Museum Africa in Newtown, the Career Expo is being hosted by Creative Knowledge, entrance is free

“The creative industry is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the global economy and has a major positive influence on income generation and job creation. Government has also recognised this sector as a key contributor to job creation, as well as significantly contributing to social development and nation building,” says Rosie Katz of Creative Knowledge.

“Yet it is only until recently that a career in the creative industries has been recognised as a sustainable livelihood, creating many new career paths for our learners and youth,” says Katz. "The Expo is being implemented as a non-commercial event that will ensure accessibility to a diverse audience made up of school learners and educators from high schools, out-of-school youth, as well as other interested learners, educators and parents.” Explains Katz.

Twelve Heads of State commit themselves to play the role of leadership, advocacy and facilitation for Arts, Culture and Heritage





On the sidelines of the 33rd Assembly of the African Union held in Addis Ababa, twelve Heads of State solemnly accepted the invitation of His Excellency Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, President of the Republic of Mali, African Union leader for Arts, Culture and Heritage to act as co-champions.



Upon his designation as African Union Leader for Arts, Culture and Heritage, His Excellency the President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, found it appropriate to establish a presidential level structure to carry out his mission. Thus, he invited twelve Heads of State to join him in a Council of the Peers.





The twelve Heads of State, from the five regions of the continent, are:

President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca.
President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.
President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
President of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso.
President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi.
Kingdom of Morocco, His Majesty Mohamed VI.
President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.
President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta.
President of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, Mrs Sahle-Work Zewde .
President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.
President of Namibia, Hage Geingob.
The mandate of the Council is to formulate strategic orientations and to ensure that these orientations are taken into account in the activities of the African Union (AU). The members of this Council are also expected to play the role of leadership, advocacy and facilitation at the sub-regional level.

At the inaugural meeting of the Council, the twelve Heads of State committed themselves to give a pride of place to culture, arts and heritage.

In that framework, they adopted a draft resolution that will tabled with a view to declaring 2021 as the year of culture:

In addition, the twelve co-leaders commit themselves to:

Ø advocate for the ratification of the Charter for the African Cultural Renaissance;

Ø gather political and financial commitment of the member States for the African World Heritage Fund;

Ø promote culture as a tool for peace building;

Ø develop creative industries generating economic development and outreach;

Ø preserve and develop African languages as a vehicle of communication, knowledge and culture; and

Ø speed up the return of cultural assets.

On all these subjects, the countries will work together with the relevant organs of the African Union and according to a principle of subsidiarity.
