Graham Contemporary returns to the Invetsec Cape Town Art Fair next month, presenting abstract artists Hedwig Barry, Turiya Magadlela and Mary Visser.

If abstraction has proved the surest means today to afford this much needed subtlety, it is because of the cacophony all around, the deadening din. Because we are now distracted by distraction, incapable of honing a living thought or profound feeling, slaves to the algorithmic, we are at great risk of losing what makes us human. Abstraction has proved the best medium to answer our acute experience of lack. As the great French abstract painter, Pierre Soulages, notes, ‘Painting is above all a poetic experience. It is a metaphor, it cannot be explained, it cannot even be touched by explanation: meanings projected onto it form and dissolve. That is why art provokes, unsettles, and exalts – like life itself.’

VIP opening takes place on 19 February.

Wrapped up in his identity and tied to a strong sense of place, Marc Standing’s work is a rich tapestry of his Zimbabwean upbringing and his wandering nature as both a global nomad and part of the African diaspora.

ON VIEW | Jennifer Morrison is interested in weighing accident against deliberation, precision and control against playfulness and abandon. She likes the way abstraction allows for ambiguity - not needing or wanting definitive answers or didactic explanations. Morrison prefers meaning, if it is found at all, to be open. Her work is subjectively driven and is largely driven by intuition.

ON VIEW | Alexander Opper’s “Recent Shadows” is part of the current exhibition, But Beautiful.

“Coming from an education in the discipline of architecture, now working as an artist, my artmaking has always engaged instances of the missed, the ignored and the overlooked. I am captivated by the less legible – but no less important – aspects of life. Such not-so-obvious spaces, things and phenomena tend to occur in liminal zones, for instance along boundaries, on edges and at thresholds. In search of new ways of seeing, I mine such generally missed notions for the revealing and surprising possibilities they hold.”

ON VIEW | “I like to maximize playfulness within a very narrow set of parameters. First and foremost, I consider myself to be a formalist. Fundamental aspects of composition, form and colour are the things that I think about. Working within an established tradition of geometric abstraction, humour is my way of keeping the conversation around formalism fresh.” – Alex Coetzee
