Railways Café, Irene to the Rescue

A serious shack fire broke out in the informal settlement near Metro Station in Irene. Before the fire brigade arrived, the Railways Café team sprang into action with fire hoses, extinguishers, fire reels, and anything else they could get their hands on to help contain the flames.

The quick response helped prevent what could have been a devastating tragedy. Schoolchildren had only recently returned home, and many families were at risk of losing everything.

On a lighter note, we're starting to think that being a sound engineer at Railways Café should come with humanitarian qualifications! A special thank you to Tutu, our sound engineer, and every member of the Railways Café.

A special thank you as well to ILA and Brinant.

Most of the people residing here are working in homes and gardens in Irene. If you are in a position to help, consider whether there are safer accommodation options for the people who work for you. Lasting change often starts with the choices we make in our own communities.

Please stay vigilant, especially during the colder months, when the risk of shack fires is at its highest. Together, we can build a safer, more caring community for everyone.
