Painting outdoors is a very different experience depending on location. Last week I painted a sunset over the farms between Gansbaai and Baardskeerdersbos, and the following day the early morning mist along the cliffs of Hermanus.
For the artist the location determines the nature of the distractions (eg chatty dog walkers vs mooing cows returning from milking), and then of course an urban landscape introduces social themes like houses while the more rural one goes the closer to a sense of wilderness develops.
Always a sense of place van be sensed, unique to painting on location.

I happily mounted this accidental 'retrospective' when photographing a commissioned canvas in my parents' beach house and inadvertently caught the other two paintings in the background. The seascape behind was painted about ten years ago on the Hermanus cliffs, and the far one is a mono print from my first year at art school, of a field in Observatory. The big canvas was commissioned recently as a wedding present for a New Zealand couple that grew up beneath this mountain in George. By completing it on site and limiting my references to smaller paintings and no photos, more atmosphere is allowed for. The easel caterpillar did not respond to being moved in spite of the two buckets of grease.

This quirky painting just sold on my solo "Home and Away", at Gabrielskloof until Wednesday. A close friend described it as two dwarves coming up the hill and about to appear on that farm road. I love cyprusses, they offer that bit of vertical when the landscape feels flat.
