At first glance, she feels familiar—red cape fluttering in the sea breeze, barefoot on the cliffs, eyes closed to the noise of the world.

But look again. A wolf’s tail emerges. Legs too.

In Double By, artist Haidee Nel explores the blurred boundary between the victim and the perpetrator, the child and the shadow. This work is not just about fairy tales—it’s about the duality we carry within.

“My children and nature are my muses,” says Haidee, who lives and works in Swellendam, raising her daughters close to the land. “The barefoot child has become a recurring figure in my work—innocent, grounded, and brave.”

Double By forms part of the yearlong Sculpture on the Cliffs exhibition in Hermanus, featuring ten extraordinary women artists.

Collecting Water" by renowned land artist Strijdom van der Merwe.

This remarkable piece, crafted from mild steel, galvanized, and powder-coated materials, stands at 2.6 meters tall and 1.22 meters wide – a striking representation of South Africa’s deep connection to the sea and its spiritual significance.

In many South African cultures, the sea is seen as a powerful ancestral source, carrying knowledge and promoting spiritual purification. Traditionally, drinking sea water cleanses both body and soul, grounding us and connecting us to the past. Though a coastal tradition, bottled sea water can now be found far inland, serving as a reminder of the connection between the physical and the spiritual.

In metal and striking colours, Wehrner Lemmer Sculptures mimic the perfect balance found in nature, albeit much simplified.

Shapes evoke, moving forward and forcing upwards into life. Wehrner Lemmer Sculptures portray the intense calmness that nature affords him. The tubular curves present in many of my works are representative of the cycles of life around us, especially those at work in the natural world. The changing of seasons, the seasons of life that he finds himself in right now, underlie the expectation and the reward of what lies ahead.
